About The Position

The DSHS WSH Mental Health Technician 2 (MHT 2) Ambulation and Maintenance Program Technician role focuses on assisting patients with mobility, independence, and overall physical wellness. Working under the supervision of a Licensed Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant, the technician will escort patients between their wards and the Physical Therapy Clinic, incorporating therapeutic activities that promote rehabilitation goals and functional outcomes. This position is suitable for individuals who enjoy close patient interaction, supporting rehabilitation, and making a positive impact on the lives of those with complex physical and behavioral health challenges. The department emphasizes fairness, access, and social justice, striving to support all Washingtonians.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED or higher
  • Two years of experience in a psychiatric or mental health setting or completion of a Mental Health Technician 1 in-training plan
  • A current Nursing Assistant Registered (NAR) or Nursing Assistant Certification (NAC/CNA) within the State of Washington
  • Ability to communicate through oral and written forms of communication with management, peers, patients, and the public
  • Skills to assist with potentially assaultive or self-harming patients
  • Working knowledge of group behavior and dynamics
  • Experience in intervening and de-escalating crisis/dangerous situations

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a physical rehabilitation setting, therapy clinic, skilled nursing facility, hospital rehabilitation department, or similar healthcare environment
  • Experience assisting individuals with mobility, exercise, restorative care, or therapeutic activities
  • Knowledge of basic rehabilitation principles, body mechanics, and safe patient handling techniques

Responsibilities

  • Escorts patients to and from their wards and the Physical Therapy Clinic while incorporating therapeutic activities, mobility training, and patient engagement during the escort process
  • Implements ambulation and therapeutic exercise programs as established and directed by a licensed Physical Therapist
  • Assists patients in performing prescribed exercises and mobility activities to achieve care plan goals
  • Monitors patient status before, during, and after treatment; reports observations to supervising therapy staff
  • Maintains competency in therapeutic exercise techniques, mobility assistance, adaptive devices, and exercise equipment operation
  • Educates patients on post-treatment activities and supports staff education initiatives
  • Ensures patient confidentiality, HIPAA compliance, infection control, and workplace safety standards
  • Maintains equipment functionality through routine inspection, troubleshooting, and coordination of repairs
  • Collaborates with the treatment team to provide quality patient care and effective communication with patients, staff, and external providers
