About The Position

The City of Fishers is seeking a full-time Mental Health Support Specialist to support community-based behavioral health and social service initiatives within the Community Support Team of the Fishers Health Department. This position plays a key role in providing mental health support and behavioral health navigation, and helping residents understand, access, and engage with appropriate services across the continuum of care. Under supervision of the LCSW, the Mental Health Support Specialist supports care coordination and system navigation, for individuals experiencing behavioral health challenges, social needs, or barriers to care. This role works closely with public safety partners, healthcare providers, and community organizations to ensure timely connection to services. The position supports a preventative, public health-focused approach to addressing mental health, substance use, domestic violence and social determinants of health. This position does not provide direct clinical therapy or independent clinical assessments and escalates concerns to the LCSW as appropriate.

Requirements

  • A combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will be considered
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Health, Psychology, Human Services, or related field
  • Active Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW) in the State of Indiana preferred
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience in behavioral health, social services, or case management preferred
  • Experience navigating healthcare or social service systems strongly preferred
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license and ability to be insured to operate city vehicles
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated success maintaining positive working relationships with community partners and networking
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and complex needs
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and case management systems
  • Evening and weekend hours required

Nice To Haves

  • Active Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW) in the State of Indiana
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience in behavioral health, social services, or case management
  • Experience navigating healthcare or social service systems

Responsibilities

  • Responds to referrals from public safety partners (community paramedicine, police, fire) and ensures appropriate follow-up
  • Supports clients who are referred to Mental Health Specialist and those requesting assistance via walk-in hours or appointments
  • Provides behavioral health support, navigation, and follow up; Assisting clients including adults, children, and caregivers in identifying appropriate mental health, substance use, and social service resources
  • Conducts intake, screening, and non-clinical assessments to identify needs and service gaps
  • Supports individuals in overcoming barriers to care (transportation, insurance, system complexity, stigma, etc.)
  • Assists in crisis response support (non-clinical role), including de-escalation and connection to appropriate levels of care
  • Conducts home and community-based visits to improve access and engagement
  • Assists in facilitating trainings and community outreach related to behavioral health awareness and resource access
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation in compliance with departmental standards
  • Collaborates with schools, healthcare systems, nonprofits, and other partners to strengthen referral pathways
  • Supports data collection, tracking, and evaluation of behavioral health initiatives
  • Advocates for equitable access to health and social services
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of local behavioral health resources and service availability
  • Back up for Community Health Advocate, including but not limited to fall prevention activities
  • Other duties as assigned
