About The Position

Direct Support Professional Level 1 - Mental Health Counselor for the Boys Community Residence at Catholic Charities of Broome County. This role involves acting as a role model, teaching residents life skills, performing household maintenance, assisting with meals, supervising medication administration, providing transportation, and assisting in crisis management. The position also requires completing documentation, participating in meetings and training, and representing the agency in the community.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Some experience in human service field
  • Effective written and observational skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a team approach
  • Ability to work with people at different functioning levels
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to accommodate flexible work schedule
  • Familiar with computer programs (e.g. Work, Excel)
  • The ability to climb stairs, bend, stoop, sit, stand, reach and lift items weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to legally operate a vehicle in NY State

Responsibilities

  • Act as a role model while always providing supervision to residents
  • Teach/assist in developing/completing ADL skills
  • Perform routine household maintenance and upkeep
  • Assist with planning/preparing meals and clean-up as needed
  • Supervise resident’s self-administration of medications and/or treatments as per doctor’s orders and document in log if taken as prescribed
  • Provide transportation as needed
  • Assist in crisis management- crisis avoidance, de-escalation and intervention and follow resident’s behavioral support plan
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings, team planning meetings and case reviews
  • Complete progress notes and documentation in daily log as required
  • Assist resident’s in working towards achievement of service plan goals & objectives
  • Understand and follow all program policies and procedures and OMH regulations
  • Report all household or resident sensitive situations to supervisor
  • Participate in and successfully complete all required staff training and development activities
  • Participate in intake and discharge planning
  • Participate in family meetings as requested
  • Represent the Agency and program in the community and with other service providers
  • Perform other related tasks as directed by supervisor
