About The Position

The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization since 1973, providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care. The Youth Health Clinic provides team-based primary health care and social programming to youth aged 12 to 24. The Mental Health Clinician, with a focus on intakes, is responsible for completing intakes for clients interested in accessing the 12-session model, providing single sessions and offer referrals to internal and external resources. The Mental Health Clinician - Intake, collects information on client concerns pertaining to mental health specific goals with therapy, as well as a mental and social history. Intakes are an integral part of the client experience and help guide if the Youth Health Centre services are a good fit with the client’s goals, as well as provide education on what The Alex can offer them. This role is part of an interdisciplinary team and works closely with both medical and social YHC staff.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Active registration with a professional discipline in Alberta.
  • Experience working with high risk, vulnerable youth.
  • Confident in assessing risk of suicidality and ability to safety plan accordingly.
  • Experience working with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Experience working from a trauma informed and culturally sensitive lens.
  • Awareness of community resources and how to refer to them.
  • A calm and non-judgmental communication style.
  • First Aid (Basic or Intermediate) – Level C CPR & AED within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and child welfare intervention check are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Training in single session solution focused therapy is preferred.
  • Knowledge of CHR EMR is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and gather information for the mental health intake in a trauma informed and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Provide single session counselling.
  • Refer clients to external agencies when necessary and appropriate.
  • Assist in scheduling initial appointments with the Youth Health Centre Mental Health Clinician and/or Medical team.
  • Collaborate with clinic scheduler to ensure clients are contacted in a timely manner and booked in for appointments in an equitable way.
  • Collect and compile data for research and evaluation purposes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
