About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Service Delivery, EUTC, the Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor will assist clients in identifying, understanding, and overcoming personal, social, economic and physical issues, relating to mental health and addictions.

Requirements

A minimum of an undergraduate degree in the field of social services, mental health and addictions, counselling or a combination of related education and training will be considered.
Work experience in a social service environment and mental health issues.
Knowledge of First Nation social issues, economic issues, history and culture.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and co-operatively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Assess needs and make appropriate referrals, develop strategies for client support, education and follow-up care.
Skills in assessment, case management and advocacy.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and co-operatively as a part of a team is required.
Knowledge of First Nation organizations, City of Winnipeg and provincial services and resources in the areas of mental health, addictions centers, supportive housing, child welfare and justice systems and First Nation culture.
Proficient in using Microsoft office -Word, Excel, Power Point and
Valid Driver’s License and vehicle
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry to be provided.

Preference will be given to First Nations people. If successful, applicants will be asked to provide verification of citizenship documentation issued by a First Nation or government-issued documentation or affirmation from Inuit, Métis, or non-status Indigenous community with which they identify.

Responsibilities

Provide counseling as a supportive resource to clients who are experiencing mental health and addiction issues, relating to the Indian Day School.
Provide holistic and culturally appropriate support which incorporates both traditional and contemporary methods involving the four aspects of the individual: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
Increase client access to resources and provide appropriate referrals to service providers in the areas of housing, health, addictions, income security, treatment, education, employment, First Nations bands, and child and family services.
Prepare and maintain the required treatment records and reports.
Facilitate informational and educational workshops relating to mental health and addictions to clients and/or groups.
Counsel clients individually and in group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life and to assist in making positive changes in their lives.
Communication skills required to write support letters and other documents to advocate for clients.
Provide liaison with community agencies.
Identifies client needs for services and makes appropriate referrals, or develops alternate strategies for client support, education and follow-up care.
Maintain confidentiality of records relating to client treatment, knowledge of the PHIA procedure.
Act as advocate in coordinating required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.
Provide monthly reports on activities and clients seen and assisted, through a Excel spreadsheet report.
