About The Position

The Men’s Basketball League Referee officiates scheduled adult basketball league games, applies league and basketball rules consistently, and helps maintain a safe, respectful, and positive environment for participants. The City of Port Washington provides full-city services including Public Safety (Police, Fire, EMS), Engineering, Public Works, Water and Sewer utilities, Building Inspections, Community Development, Parks and Recreation, Marina, Senior Center, Library, Finance, Clerk and Administration. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Knowledge/application of basketball rules
  • Consistent and impartial officiating
  • Authority to address misconduct/eject players
  • Conflict management
  • Injury
  • Ability to be professional and enforce rules
  • Ability to cooperate and work well with other staff members and the public

Nice To Haves

  • Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Officiates scheduled league play
  • Communicates decisions clearly and professionally to players and team captains.
  • Assists participants, answers questions, and maintains a positive experience
  • Addresses unsportsmanlike conduct and may remove/eject participants in accordance with league rules and department procedures.
  • Inspects the playing area and equipment for obvious safety concerns prior to play and reports concerns to Parks & Recreation staff.
  • Notify management of facility needs and any problems that may arise
  • Ensure safety standards are met, and department and facility policies are followed
  • Notify Parks and Recreation department of weather cancellations and rescheduling, standings, forfeits, player ejections, accidents, or incidents.
  • Contact Captains in the event of cancellation due to weather or forfeits.
  • Responds appropriately to injuries or emergencies and provides first aid/CPR within the scope of current training, when appropriate.
  • Completes required accident/incident reports.
