About The Position

The Membership Associate’s primary responsibility is to greet and welcome all who visit the YMCA. The Membership Associates build the Y community by providing accurate information and connecting members and non-members with one another, staff members, programs, and resources that will help them to accomplish their goals. The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) was named a 2025 Top Workplace by The Philadelphia Inquirer for a second consecutive year. An association of nine YMCAs serving Chester County, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine is a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child, promoting healthy living, and fostering social responsibility through life-changing programs for all.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills preferred, ability to learn new software and new software applications quickly.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills preferred
  • Prior experience in sales, customer service, hospitality, or member-facing roles strongly preferred
  • Confident initiating conversations, asking questions, and guiding people toward the best membership option for their needs
  • Cash handling experience preferred
  • Goal-oriented mindset with a desire to meet and exceed membership growth targets
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and stay positive under pressure
  • Comfortable with outreach, follow-up calls, and proactive engagement with prospective members
  • Enjoy working with and helping people with a friendly and positive demeanor
  • Obtain and maintain all additional new hire certifications and trainings within 90 days of hire
  • Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Provides outstanding customer experience by greeting members and guests and helping to direct them to the appropriate areas in the facility.
  • Develops and maintains a full understanding of the benefits, offerings, and values of YGBW membership and programming and can articulate them to all types of people with differing needs.
  • Actively engages prospective members to understand their goals and recommends membership and program options that best support them.
  • Assists in giving cause-driven facility tours for prospective members.
  • Confidently asks for the membership at the end of the tour or conversation and supports the prospect through the joining process.
  • Performs basic functions in the organizational membership software system including but not limited to starting and processing memberships, updating contact information, taking payments, and registering individuals for programs.
  • Ensures facility security by scanning members in and checking that their membership is valid before permitting entry.
  • Screens prospects and non-members through the organization’s sexual abuse screening tool before providing entry.
  • Answers member inquiries and/or directs to the appropriate staff member, ensuring the inquiry is responded to appropriately and in a timely fashion.
  • Maintains accurate cash, receipt records, and financial operating procedures.
  • Understands and properly executes opening and closing procedures.
  • Maintains a professional atmosphere and presentation with proper and current signage.
  • Always wears approved YGBW apparel and name tag when on duty.
  • Ensure compliance with all YGBW policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Participates in outreach efforts including follow-up calls, community engagement, and lead nurturing to support membership growth
  • Tracks personal activity toward membership goals and supports the team in achieving branch targets.
