About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Member, Mechanical Engineering Staff (MES) to support the design, layout, testing, and evaluation of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices and systems. This role is responsible for preparing design specifications, analyses, and recommendations for presentation and approval, while contributing to product development activities across assigned projects. The successful candidate will analyze mechanical requirements to help determine the feasibility of designs within time and cost constraints, investigate solutions to product or process issues, and consolidate results of mechanical design elements for assigned efforts. This position also supports the origination or modification of material, component, and process specifications or requirements, and contributes to interpretation and implementation of customer specifications and documentation requirements. This is a Level 2 professional role and it is well suited for an intermediate mechanical engineering professional with practical knowledge of mechanical design and development tools, including 3D modeling software, finite element analysis (FEA), product line management (PLM) tools and configuration management practices. The position may support applications involving shipboard integrated communications, micro-electronic packaging, rack design, and environmental ruggedization and testing. The role works under moderate supervision, independently supports larger, moderately complex assignments, and contributes to achieving operational targets with some impact on departmental results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience, or Graduate Degree or equivalent with 0 to 2 years of prior related experience, or in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 6 years of prior related experience.
  • Experience with 3D modeling software and mechanical design documentation.
  • Practical knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CREO for part, assembly, and drawing development.
  • Experience with PLM systems, preferably Windchill.
  • Familiarity with configuration management processes, engineering changes, and released technical baselines.
  • Experience supporting FEA, preferably using Ansys, for structural, vibration, or thermal analysis.
  • Familiarity with mechanical design for ruggedized hardware or harsh environment applications.
  • Experience supporting environmental ruggedization and testing.
  • Familiarity with shipboard integrated communications systems or related defense, maritime, or electronics packaging applications.
  • Exposure to micro-electronic packaging and dense electro-mechanical integration.
  • Experience with rack design for electronic systems packaging and integration.
  • General awareness of project cost and schedule tracking; familiarity with earned value management (EVM) is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications, technical documentation, and engineering requirements.
  • Ability to solve routine and moderately complex problems using standard procedures, prior experience, and engineering judgment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently on moderately complex assignments under moderate supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design, layout, testing, and evaluation of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices, components, and systems.
  • Prepare design specifications, engineering analyses, technical recommendations, and supporting documentation for review and approval.
  • Analyze mechanical requirements and assess feasibility of design approaches within schedule and cost constraints.
  • Develop mechanical designs using 3D modeling software, including CREO, for components, assemblies, packaging concepts, and rack-level integration.
  • Support product data management activities using PLM tools, including Windchill, and follow established configuration management processes for engineering documentation and change control.
  • Perform finite element analysis (FEA) using tools such as Ansys to support evaluation of structural, thermal, and vibration performance.
  • Investigate product and process issues using standard engineering methods, prior experience, and basic analysis.
  • Consolidate and document results of mechanical design elements for assigned projects.
  • Conduct investigations involving the origination or modification of material, component, or process specifications and requirements.
  • Perform product development activities, including drawing support and interpretation and implementation of customer specifications and documentation requirements.
  • Support the design and packaging of hardware for shipboard integrated communications or similar ruggedized system applications.
  • Contribute to micro-electronic packaging efforts, including thermal considerations, mechanical support, and integration of electronic assemblies.
  • Support rack design activities, including packaging layout, mounting provisions, maintainability features, and cable routing considerations.
  • Participate in environmental ruggedization and testing activities to help verify product performance in operational environments.
  • Communicate with contacts inside and outside the immediate team to explain and interpret job area processes, practices, and procedures.
  • Identify and address changes within own job area and make basic adjustments to systems and processes to solve problems.
  • Support project execution and coordination activities, including awareness of program cost and schedule performance.
  • May provide guidance and assistance to entry-level professionals and support-level employees.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Security Clearance.
