About The Position

Provides skilled mechanical work involving road testing, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of refuse trucks, medium and heavy-duty trucks over 26,000 lbs., aerial equipment, generators, and large equipment. Work requires the exercise of independent judgment concerning the method of repair.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalency.
  • Must have five (5) years of Medium / Heavy Duty and Large equipment experience as a Technician.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of specific vocational preparation in Truck repair.
  • Must own tools to perform necessary repairs.
  • Ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions.
  • Must pass a mechanical aptitude test as determined by Fleet Manager.
  • Must be certified and maintain certifications as required by local, federal, and state laws; this may include, but is not limited to testing required by specific agencies such as ASE (Automotive Service Excellence), Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling (MACS), FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency).
  • Must possess a valid Florida CDL Driver’s License with a clean driving record or be able to obtain a CDL within one year.
  • Must pass a background screening process.
  • The employee must successfully pass a background screening process and comply with the City’s Drug-Free Workplace policy.
  • The City will also verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired so the proper completion of Form I-9 is required, which includes the employee providing documents evidencing identity and employment authorization.

  • Welding experience with acetylene/oxygen, MIG, and TIG Preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnosis, repairs, and maintenance of a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel equipment over 26,000 lbs., both on and off road.
  • Remove, replace, repair, maintain, and diagnose components and/or complete assemblies that fall under the following categories: Engine (EX: Fluids, Water pump, belts, filters etc.), Transmission & Transaxles (EX: Fluids, Valve body, connector etc.), Manual Drive Tran & Axles (EX: Fluids, CV joints, Clutch etc.), Suspension & Steering (EX: Fluids, Struts, mounts, Tires, etc.), Brakes (EX: Fluids, Rotors, Pads, Module etc.), Electrical (EX: Fuses, Harness, Bulbs, etc.), Heating and Air-conditioning (EX: Freon, Evaporator, Condenser, etc.), Performance (EX: Diagnosing of electrical emissions components and replacement of, etc.), Diesel (EX: Fluids, Filters, Injectors etc.), Hydraulic Systems (EX: Fluids, Cylinders, Valves, etc.), Air Systems (EX: Air Chambers, Valves, etc.).
  • Provides emergency road service to all municipal vehicles and equipment.
  • Have welding experience with acetylene/oxygen, MIG, and TIG.
  • Assembles hoses and other components as required.
  • Keeps work area clean.
  • Safely uses all types of power and hand tools, lifts, and jacks necessary in performing the task.
  • Road tests before to verify concerns, then after assuring the repairs performed meet OEM standards and address the customer’s concern.
