About The Position

This position is responsible for administering medications to residents in an assisted living facility, following all established policies and procedures. The Medication Aide will also be involved in identifying and preventing medication errors, maintaining accurate records, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals. This role requires adherence to strict confidentiality and participation in quality assurance programs to ensure the highest standard of resident care.

Requirements

  • High school education or its equivalent.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must be a licensed Medication Aide.
  • Must have successfully completed a state-approved training program and any necessary examination(s) in accordance with state laws.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Prolonged use of a desk top or laptop computer.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk and talk, read or hear.
  • Frequent use of all office related equipment to include; copier/scanner/fax, telephone, and calculator.

Responsibilities

  • Administer oral and/or topical medications accurately and safely as ordered by the attending physician or Medical Director.
  • Follow facility policies and procedures for medication administration, including verification of resident identity and medication labeling.
  • Note and report any errors in medication administration.
  • Assist in developing and implementing procedures to identify, prevent, and address medication errors.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records, including charting medications, documenting refusals, and reporting errors.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Nursing Services, attending physicians, Medical Director, and pharmacists to ensure smooth medication management.
  • Report resident complaints or grievances to the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Participate in facility surveys and quality assurance programs.
  • Follow facility policies regarding the destruction of medications and assist in carrying out these rules.
  • Ensure all medications are properly labeled and follow charting procedures.
  • Assist in documenting and removing discontinued medications.
  • Follow procedures for drug receipt errors, including notification and documentation.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
  • Promptly notify the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or Director of Nursing Services of any errors or reactions to medications.
  • Measure, record, and report the vital signs of residents.
  • Follow facility procedures for residents self-administering medications.
  • Maintain knowledge of common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms.
  • Attend continuing education programs to stay current in the profession.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information.
  • Report any suspected or known violations of confidentiality or unauthorized access to information systems.
  • Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Follow work assignments and schedules.
  • Cooperate with inter-departmental and facility personnel.
  • Assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
