About The Position

Performs advanced (senior-level) technical review and evaluation of new and renewal applications and major procedural amendments to produce certificates of registration for facilities utilizing radiation-producing machines to ensure compliance with applicable state regulations. Performs detailed technical review and approves facility policies, operating, emergency, and safety procedures, and radiation personnel qualifications. Provides technical information to applicants, the regulated community, and the public concerning registration and radiological health requirements. Provides guidance and interpretation of state regulations and procedures. Participates in the formation and revision of policies and procedures. Reviews and comments on proposed radiation control regulations and regulatory guides. Participates as a team member of various projects. Actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, including nuclear emergency response drills, exercises, and actual response to accidents. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Experience using computers.

Responsibilities

  • Performs independent technical review of medical x-ray registration applications to produce certificates of registration for new, renewals, and major amendments.
  • Determines when additional information is necessary and corresponds with the registrant to obtain additional information and clarification.
  • Prepares and approves correspondence and certificate of registration documents based on regulatory requirements.
  • Approves applications and updates information in the Versa database system.
  • Uploads all reviewed and approved application documents into OnBase for electronic storage, ensuring accurate naming conventions.
  • Uses computer in various programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint, Adobe Pro, and Outlook.
  • Responds to inquiries and provides information to the regulated community, the public, and agency staff concerning radiation safety, regulatory requirements, and registration procedures.
  • Instructs administrative staff in completion of work as assigned to produce registration documents, monitors work for quality assurance and proofreading for errors.
  • Assumes full responsibility for document accuracy.
  • Evaluates and approves detailed technical facility policies, operating, emergency, and safety procedures to ensure safe operation of radiation machines to minimize danger to operators and to the public.
  • Authorizes mobile operations and healing arts screening programs.
  • Performs advanced technical review of accelerator shielding to determine adequacy before authorizing operation.
  • Performs technical review and analysis of operating, emergency, and safety procedures for accelerators and therapeutic radiation machines.
  • Participates in the development of policies and procedures and revision of regulations, regulatory and technical guidance documents for use by radiation staff, applicants, registrants, and the public.
  • Reviews and comments on proposed radiation control regulations and regulatory guides.
  • Coordinates registration actions with other divisions of the radiation control programs.
  • May accompany local inspectors in the field to enhance knowledge of radiological procedures and practices and remain informed of state-of-the-art technology.
  • May participate in enforcement actions as an independent technical reviewer.
  • Attends formal training and short courses as available and as directed.
  • Actively participates and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation including nuclear emergency response drills, exercises and actual response to accidents.
