About The Position

The Medical Technologist is responsible for performing a variety of laboratory tests in microbiology, clinical chemistry, hematology, serology, coagulation, and urinalysis. This role involves performing both routine and special test procedures, ensuring accurate results, proper use of quality controls, and maintenance of complex instruments. The technologist will also troubleshoot methodologies, manage reagent inventories, and potentially assist in the development of new laboratory techniques. Additionally, they may be responsible for the work of others in the temporary absence of the manager and participate in continuing education programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or equivalent education/training (three years of college plus one year of medical technology training, or Bachelor's degree in a science plus one year of clinical laboratory work experience, or passed HEW proficiency exam).
  • Ability to supervise and teach others.
  • Ability to evaluate procedures, equipment, and people (peers and subordinates).
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to recognize and identify causes of problems (technical and instrumental), present alternatives, and determine solutions.
  • Ability to perform complex analyses which may require many steps and variables.
  • Ability to communicate facts and ideas to a variety of people within and outside the laboratory.
  • In-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments and their interrelationships.
  • Ability to work under stress.
  • Responsible for own work and decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and special test procedures for which qualified by education, training, and experience.
  • Ensure accurate results and proper use of quality controls, materials, and procedures.
  • Recognize the interdependency of tests and conditions affecting test results.
  • Correct own errors and use/maintain a variety of complex instruments.
  • Identify and correct potential problems.
  • Maintain proper reagent inventory levels.
  • Develop new methods and techniques for the laboratory under minimal supervision.
  • Serve as a methodology troubleshooter, investigating and correcting problems.
  • Potentially supervise the work of others during the temporary absence of the manager.
  • Participate in continuing education programs.
  • Draw blood samples.
  • Perform routine, special, and automated tests in hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, clinical chemistry, serology, and immunology.
  • Set up, read, and report results of cultures in bacteriology.
  • Make and read smears.
  • Perform prescribed quality control procedures for all tests and record results.
  • Teach laboratory procedures to new personnel.
  • Perform test procedures in accordance with the procedure manual.
  • Inventory and request supplies and reagents.
  • Prepare reagents as needed.
  • Maintain a neat and clean work area.
  • Assist physicians as needed.
  • Abide by laboratory policies.
  • Report test results to authorized personnel.
  • Rotate between sections due to workload, staffing, and orientation.
  • Rotate shifts with other laboratory personnel.
  • Fill in at satellite locations.
  • Print PE-7 log at satellites and record workload.
  • Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
  • Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training and accomplishments.
  • Provide excellent customer service and adhere to SC Way customer service philosophy.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
