About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing and interpreting laboratory tests in the clinical laboratory. This role involves assisting the Laboratory Manager with daily lab functions, maintaining a quality control program, and implementing, initiating, and updating clinical laboratory procedures according to proper standards and regulations. The position requires documenting Quality Assurance, resolving technical problems, and taking remedial actions when test systems deviate from established specifications. Reviewing QC and maintenance logs, ensuring safety for all personnel, and participating in regular proficiency testing programs are also key aspects. The Medical Laboratory Technician will maintain appropriate laboratory paperwork, troubleshoot laboratory equipment and computer systems, and order/maintain testing supplies. Responsibilities include performing various laboratory tests such as chemistries, hematology, and immunoassay testing, assisting in new staff training, and understanding LIS functions. The role also involves handling laboratory data collection systems to ensure requests are properly ordered, cancelled, and charged, correctly identifying patients, and performing specimen processing, preparation, and distribution. Maintaining awareness of policies and procedures, enforcing infection control processes, and effectively communicating with patients and staff are crucial. The position requires keeping work areas clean and stocked, handling information with discretion and confidentiality, and coordinating with the lab manager. The ability to work independently and in a team environment, comply with OSHA, CLIA, and federal regulations, and maintain a professional appearance and attitude are expected. Essential job functions include effectively using technology like Outlook, LIS, and MatrixCare, analyzing work methods for improvement, communicating efficiently with administration and colleagues, supporting PruittHealth's goals, representing the company professionally, and demonstrating attendance and punctuality.

Requirements

  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft office and other software programs.
  • Ability to pass a standardized color blindness test.
  • ASCP, AAB or AMT (must be current) certification.
  • B.S. degree in medical technology, or chemical, physical, or biological sciences, plus three (3) years’ experience in a clinical laboratory, OR B.S. degree in medical technology, or chemical, physical, or biological sciences, plus successful completion of a specialist certification exam (SH ASCP, SBB ASCP, SM-ASCP, SC-ASCP, SI-ASCP or DLM ASCP) with a total of three (3) years’ experience in a clinical laboratory, OR Master's degree in administration, management, medical technology, chemical, physical, or biological science, plus three (3) years’ experience in a clinical laboratory, OR Have state recognized certification as a Medical Technologist.
  • 1 year experience preferred but not required.
  • Requires standing for long periods of time.
  • Working in a laboratory environment.
  • Bending and stretching required.
  • Ability to lift five to ten pounds.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Use of telephone and computer are required.
  • Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Laboratory Manager with daily lab functions.
  • Maintains a quality control program appropriate for testing performed in the lab.
  • Ability to implement, initiate, update and perform clinical laboratory procedures according to proper standards and regulations.
  • Documents Quality Assurance.
  • Resolves technical problems and takes remedial actions whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performed specifications.
  • Reviews all QC and maintenance logs.
  • Helps ensures safety for all personnel in the lab.
  • Participates in regular proficiency testing programs appropriate for the lab testing done.
  • Maintains all appropriate laboratory paperwork and keeps copies for 2 years.
  • Maintaining/troubleshooting laboratory equipment and computer systems, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
  • Ordering and maintaining testing supplies and equipment.
  • Performs laboratory testing such as chemistries, hematology, immunoassay testing.
  • Assists in new staff training.
  • Has a general understanding of the LIS function.
  • Handles laboratory data collection systems and equipment to ensure requests for laboratory tests are properly ordered, cancelled and charged.
  • Correctly identifies all patients to avoid mistakes that can affect treatment.
  • Performs specimen processing, preparation and distribution of specimens.
  • Maintains a constant awareness of policies, and procedures. Always ensuring enforcement of infection control processes when working with or around patients.
  • Effectively communicate with patients, reassuring them, making them feel at ease when you are present. Effectively communicates on the phone and face to face by being courteous, prompt and polite. Ability to document all information correctly.
  • Responsible for keeping all work areas clean and properly stocked.
  • Handles information with discretion and always maintains confidentiality.
  • Coordinates and consults with lab manager regarding lab related issues.
  • Able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Comply with all OSHA, CLIA, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Incorporates the use of technology into day-to-day tasks by using Outlook, LIS, MatrixCare and other electronic systems effectively and accurately.
  • Ability to analyze work methods to effectively organize work, make improvements, and correct problems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work efficiently with administration, mangers, supervisors, partners, and co-workers.

  • Represent PruittHealth in a professional manner related to appearance, communication, and the maintenance of patient confidentiality.
