About The Position

This position works with considerable independence to perform and interpret various chemical, microscopic, and/or bacteriologic tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Medical Technologist is fully proficient in the use of all equipment and procedures for an assigned area. This role performs low, moderate and/or high complexity testing as required, and performs all testing and work assignments with a positive sense of urgency meeting all established turnaround times and deadlines. The position also involves providing guidance and consultation to lower-level technologists, technicians, and others in the interpretation of complex or unusual test results and in the performance of standard operating Blood Bank procedures. Additionally, the role ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies and instructs students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or successful completion of an accredited four-year school of Medical Technology.
  • Three years of related experience.
  • Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
  • Must Qualify as a General Supervisor under the CLIA regulations for high-complexity testing under 42 CFR 493.1461 with either a bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory sciences or medical technology from an accredited institution, PLUS 1 year of laboratory training or experience in high complexity testing.
  • Also acceptable is an associate degree in a laboratory science or MLT from an accredited institution, with at least 2 years of laboratory training/experience in high complexity testing.
  • Performs low, moderate and/or high complexity testing as required.
  • Performs all testing and work assignments with a positive sense of urgency meeting all established turnaround times and deadlines.
  • Follows established Hematology, Chemistry, and Blood Bank protocols perform tests including the most complex for an assigned area and prepares component blood products for transfusion.
  • Provides guidance and consultation to lower-level technologists, technicians and others in the interpretation of complex or unusual test results and in the performance of standard operating Blood Bank procedures.
  • Processes blood donor specimens for outside shipment and testing.
  • Sends specimens and blood products between campuses and various sites using appropriate packaging and transport methods.
  • Performs assigned duties to ensure an adequate inventory of supplies for the assigned area.
  • Monitors inventory levels and stores equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Utilizes first-in/first-out (FIFO) inventory management practices.
  • Rotates to Marlboro Campus Lab- Medical Center.
  • Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.

Nice To Haves

  • ASCP certification as an MT is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Follows established protocols to perform various tests, including the most complex, for an assigned area.
  • Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Technologist I’s and Medical Lab. Technicians in the interpretation of complex or unusual test results.
  • Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition in order to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken.
  • Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.
  • Assists in development new test and quality procedures for assigned area.
  • Ensures that test results meet requirements of the laboratory quality control program.
  • Ensures preventative maintenance for equipment in assigned area.
  • Performs moderately complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex equipment and instrumentation.
  • May assist in the roll-out of new equipment and equipment modifications.
  • Instructs technicians and technologists in the set-up and operation of new equipment and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
  • Instructs students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate records of tests performed, using computer-based systems.
