About The Position

The Medical Technologist – Section Lead is responsible for the day-to-day operations of a specific lab section, clinics point of care testing, and assuring all local, state, and federal regulations are met. The Medical Technologist – Section Lead will work in all areas of the laboratory, including chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, hematology, urinalysis, blood gases, coagulation, and serology. Tests will be performed on blood, body fluids, and tissues as ordered by the patient’s physician. Must be able to meet job requirements for phlebotomist as required. The Medical Technologist – Section Lead reports directly to the Chief Tech, Laboratory Director and/or Medical Director.

Requirements

Bachelors of Science Degree including completion of an approved Clinical Laboratory Science program.
MT (ASCP) or equivalent.
Technically competent in all areas of the clinical laboratory.

Nice To Haves

Three to five years’ experience preferred within a subsection of the laboratory.
One to three years’ leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Review all policies and procedures initially and at the time of revisions or when new procedures are offered and applicable to their job responsibilities. Will recommend improvements as warranted. Will also stay current with communication requirements from various sources (e.g.., lab leadership, organizational communications, etc.).
Operates all laboratory equipment as trained. Is competent with performing maintenance and calibration as necessary. Performs, monitors, and approves QC requirements as necessary.
Performs patient testing in an appropriate manner such that the quality and accuracy of results are acceptable. Identifies and corrects problems with specimen/instruments that could adversely affect patient care.
Participates and successfully passes proficiency testing requirements. Participates and successfully passes competency testing requirements. Participates in special projects as required by supervisor and/or director.
Assists in maintaining technical policies; evaluating/implementing/validating equipment; acts as an advanced operator with appropriate reflective skills; assists in new employee/staff training in the use of equipment and/or competency; and assists in evaluating/recommending/developing procedures and processes for new or improved technology and assists in appropriate preparation for regulatory inspection.
Will use applicable safety devices and/or PPE’s when handling and testing biohazardous materials.

Specimen collection, including patient preparation - if applicable, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage of specimens.

Able to perform each trained test method, use instruments as instructed, perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration procedures related to each test performed.
A working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
Apply quality control policies and procedures of the laboratory.
An awareness of the factors that influence test results.
Able to assess and verify the validity of patient test results through the evaluation of quality control sample values prior to reporting patient test results.
