About The Position

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist performs specimen testing, operates laboratory instruments, and reports results to appropriate personnel. The position also obtains samples for analysis and oversees maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments. The employee exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and maintains strict confidentiality.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or an appropriate related field.
• Successful completion of the MLT or MLS/MT (ASCP) Board of Registry or other national certification, or eligibility for board certification upon hire with successful completion within one year.
• For work at a West Virginia site, eligibility to obtain a West Virginia license upon hire and acquisition of the license within 60 days of hire.
• Light clerical and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform manual and automated specimen testing and operate laboratory instruments.
• Obtain specimens for analysis in the hospital and at off-site locations.
• Oversee maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and procedures.
• Perform linearity, calibrations, and quality control as required by instrument and accreditation guidelines.
• Complete assigned proficiency testing in a timely manner.
• Review and sign assigned electronic document control records.
• Assist with laboratory clerical duties, including recalling results, faxing reports, and calling alert values to physicians.
• Properly document and report NCE investigations.
• Use Meditech to create site batches for specimen transport.
• Direct and train students and new laboratory employees in procedures and instrument operation.
• Replenish supplies and maintain adequate stock in the work area.
• Under the section supervisor’s direction, research and evaluate new products, procedures, and equipment.
• Assume other duties and responsibilities as necessary.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and exhibit the MHS Standards of Excellence.
