The Medical Technologist 2 (H) performs microbiological, molecular biological and immunological tests on body specimens to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. Moreover, the incumbent facilitates quality assurance and instrument maintenance. This role performs moderate and high-complexity laboratory testing on patient specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures, manufacturer instructions, and applicable regulatory requirements. The technologist will review and verify patient results for accuracy, completeness, and consistency prior to reporting, and identify and evaluate abnormal, critical, unexpected, or inconsistent results, following established procedures for verification, repeat testing, and notification. They will also perform and document daily quality control activities, evaluate QC results, identify trends or shifts, and take appropriate corrective action when QC results are outside established acceptance criteria. Calibration, calibration verification, reagent preparation, instrument checks, and preventive maintenance will be performed according to established procedures and manufacturer recommendations. The role involves operating, monitoring, and troubleshooting automated and semi-automated laboratory instrumentation, recognizing instrument malfunctions and initiating appropriate corrective actions and service procedures when necessary. Ensuring proper specimen identification, processing, handling, storage, and disposal according to laboratory policies and procedures, and maintaining specimen integrity throughout the testing process is crucial. The technologist will review test results, flags, instrument messages, and quality indicators to identify possible analytical errors, specimen-related issues, or pre-analytical and post-analytical discrepancies. They will perform required proficiency testing, competency assessments, validation/verification activities, and quality improvement activities as assigned. Assistance with evaluation and implementation of new procedures, instruments, reagents, methodologies, and test systems, including performance of required validation or verification studies, will be required. Accurate and complete documentation related to testing, QC, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, corrective actions, and other laboratory activities must be maintained. Maintaining an adequate inventory of reagents, controls, calibrators, supplies, and other laboratory materials and reporting shortages, expired materials, or supply issues to the appropriate personnel is also part of the role. Participation in laboratory inspections, regulatory compliance activities, audits, and quality assurance initiatives, including CAP, CLIA, and other applicable requirements, is expected. Assistance with orientation, training, and competency assessment of new and existing laboratory personnel in assigned areas and providing guidance regarding laboratory procedures and instrument operation will be provided. Effective communication with laboratory staff, supervisors, pathologists, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals regarding testing procedures, specimen issues, critical results, and laboratory-related concerns is essential. Following established procedures for reporting critical values and ensuring timely and appropriate communication and documentation is required. Maintaining confidentiality of patient information and complying with applicable privacy, safety, infection control, and laboratory policies is mandatory. Identifying opportunities for process improvement and participating in departmental quality improvement, performance improvement, and patient safety initiatives is expected. Maintaining current knowledge and competency in assigned laboratory procedures, instrumentation, regulatory requirements, and applicable laboratory practices is necessary. Performing other laboratory-related duties and responsibilities as assigned, consistent with the employee's qualifications, competency, and departmental needs, will also be part of the role.
