About The Position

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to a competitive-service position. The incumbent assists the examining Medical Officer with applicant examinations, identifies physical abnormalities—including factors that may disqualify applicants from enlistment or retention—and helps determine applicants’ fitness for military duty.

The position conducts medical orientations and screenings, maintains applicant medical records, assists applicants with examination paperwork and questionnaires, performs phlebotomy, and dispatches clinical specimens to testing laboratories. The employee must complete applicable Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS training to access the system within 30 days of onboarding and/or as required. The role is a non-sensitive, Testing Designated Position subject to a personnel security background investigation and pre-employment drug screening. Personal protective equipment is provided and required. Occasional shift work may be needed for coverage during evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations, including before 0600 or after 1800 hours.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship; proof of U.S. citizenship is required.
• For GS-06 qualification through experience: one year of specialized experience assisting with physical examinations (such as optical or audiometric tests, electrocardiograms, or urine collection/processing); performing phlebotomy while following safety precautions; operating medical equipment such as audiometers, stereoscopic vision testers, or centrifuges; and documenting patient medical information accurately and completely.
• Alternatively, for GS-06 qualification through education: at least 9 semester hours of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a directly related degree, such as Medical Technology/Technician, Medical Assistant, Nursing, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, or a related field. Transcripts must be provided.
• A combination of qualifying experience and graduate education may be used if it equals at least 100% of the requirements; transcripts must be provided.
• Foreign education used to meet qualification requirements must be evaluated by a qualified private organization as equivalent to an accredited U.S. education program, or receive full course credit from an accredited U.S. college or university.
• A personnel security background investigation and suitability or fitness determination may be required.
• Pre-employment drug screening is required because the position is a Testing Designated Position.
• Successful completion of applicable MHS GENESIS training is required to access the system within 30 days of onboarding and/or as required.
• Use of employer-provided personal protective equipment is required.
• Occasional shift work may be required for evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
• A one-year probationary or trial period may be required.
• Direct deposit of pay is required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct standardized medical orientation briefings for applicants.
• Administer medical screenings, including audiometry, vision tests, and vital-sign measurements.
• Maintain applicants’ medical records during the examination process.
• Assist applicants in accurately completing physical examination paperwork and medical questionnaires.
• Perform phlebotomy to obtain blood samples for HIV and other laboratory tests.
• Dispatch clinical specimens to testing laboratories in accordance with safety and handling regulations.
• Assist the examining Medical Officer with applicant examinations and identification of physical abnormalities, including potential enlistment or retention disqualifiers.
• Help determine applicants’ fitness for military duty.
