About The Position

The Medical Specialist is responsible for the evaluation of potential donors for plasmapheresis and for providing limited emergency care, including the administration of any medications or treatments in accordance with licensure or certification, training and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) guidance. This role involves determining new donor suitability, educating donors, obtaining informed consent, managing donor medical incidents, and counseling unsuitable donors. The specialist conducts confidential interviews, performs medical histories and screening physical examinations, and assesses donor screening results to determine suitability. They also handle emergencies, administer medication within their scope of practice, review test results, and maintain knowledge of relevant regulations. Confidentiality, customer service, and adherence to safety policies are crucial. The work requires interpretation and evaluation, with potential for developing new criteria and analysis of complex problems.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a nursing, EMT, and/or Paramedic training program accredited by the state in which the donor center operates.
  • Proficient computer literacy, including Word and basic spreadsheet capabilities.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must have good customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for both internal and external communication.
  • Basic math skills (related to determining donor eligibility, recognition, and draw information).
  • Ability to read and comprehend written procedures and instructions.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts.
  • Ability to analyze errors and make effective corrections to prevent recurrence.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations and standards.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Ability to teach others.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and participate as an active team member.
  • Integrity to admit error (or possible error), which could result in the release of an unsafe product.
  • Ability to resolve both internal and external customer service problems in a positive manner.
  • Must have current CPR certificate in the state in which the center operates.
  • Must be currently licensed for the state in which the center operates and must maintain that licensure.
  • Valid LVN, RN, EMT, and/or Paramedic license is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a plasma center environment is a plus.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in a clinical or hospital setting is preferred.
  • Bilingual skills may be required, at the discretion of the organization, to meet the needs of the business.
  • Valid Driver’s License is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Determines new donor suitability and educates donors regarding the plasma donation process.
  • Obtains informed consent from donors.
  • Manages donor medical incidents and counsels unsuitable donors.
  • Conducts confidential and effective interviews with donors to obtain necessary information.
  • Performs medical histories and screening physical examinations for donors.
  • Assesses results of donor screening and laboratory tests to determine initial and continuing donor suitability.
  • Completes forms and documents comments.
  • Explains informed consent materials to donors, including procedures, hazards, and potential adverse events.
  • Handles emergencies at the plasma center by providing routine care as outlined in standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Contacts plasma center Physician or Medical Director for further instructions as needed.
  • Contacts emergency medical service/local hospital as needed.
  • Periodically checks emergency medical kit to assure supplies are present and in-date.
  • Administers medication within scope of individual licensure.
  • Reviews test results and determines continued donor suitability.
  • Follows SOPs regarding acceptable ranges of SPE scans.
  • Maintains knowledge of and applies all rules regarding four-month approvals and grace periods.
  • Assesses signs and symptoms a donor may exhibit that may contraindicate continued donation.
  • Counsels donors of unsuitable test results.
  • Provides donors with notification forms.
  • Refers donors to community facilities for follow-up testing and counseling.
  • Maintains confidentiality with respect to employee, donor and center records.
  • Understands and utilizes plasma center computer system.
  • Maintains current professional licensure, certification, and current CPR certification.
  • Maintains work environment in a clean and efficient manner.
  • Follows all environmental health safety and OSHA policies and procedures.
  • Maintains Medical Supervisory log and documents discussions of special situations with the plasma center physician on a regular basis.
  • Evaluates problems and errors and implements appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
