About The Position

The individual in this position is responsible for providing sonography services and procedures for patients at all SIU ultrasound sites. This role involves performing standard and advanced OB/GYN and high-risk Maternal-Fetal Medicine sonographic exams, assisting physicians with procedures, and managing patient scheduling and documentation. The position also supports research initiatives and policy development within the sonography department.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Current/valid registration, certification or licensure in Medical Sonography, accreditation in sonography by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS).
  • Two (2) years (24 months) of progressively more responsible work experience in the designated area of specialty.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform standard and advanced OB/GYN and high-risk Maternal-Fetal Medicine sonographic exams independently or in assistance to physicians.
  • Prepare patients for procedures and use EHR to gather relevant information.
  • Assist physicians with ultrasound-guided procedures, as applicable.
  • Staff ultrasound satellite sites and work varied hours as needed.
  • Complete sonographer portion of imaging reports, including CPT codes.
  • Maintain exam room cleanliness and stock ultrasound supplies.
  • Educate ultrasound interns, medical students, and residents in sonographic theory and techniques.
  • Participate in evaluations of students and residents.
  • Support data collection and research project development in sonography.
  • Assist in implementation and data collection for faculty-led research.
  • Prepare and verify ultrasound charts and orders in Touchworks and Athena IDX, including external referrals.
  • Coordinate scheduling and registering of patients referred for sonography services.
  • Review, arrange, and make changes to patient examination schedules as necessary.
  • Ensure preauthorization for procedures and review CPT codes.
  • Communicate routine and urgent financial authorization requests to OB/GYN and MFM teams.
  • Maintain the sonography task list, respond to patient calls, and manage appointment scheduling.
  • Review and finalize pended examination reports for accurate patient billing.
  • Assist with the Good Faith Estimate (GFE) processes.
  • Participate in planning, developing, implementing, updating and evaluating policies and procedures for all SIU ultrasound sites.
  • Make recommendations regarding fetal and gynecological ultrasound protocols.
  • Attend meetings as requested by leadership.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties described above.
