About The Position

As a Medical Records Technician with the Department of Corrections at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Coal Township, you will play an important role in maintaining reliable health records for incarcerated individuals. This position lets you support health care staff by keeping reports and documentation in order. Your work helps ensure proper treatment and continuity of care. This position manages and organizes medical records to support accurate documentation and effective health care within the institution. The role helps maintain compliance with policies, standards, and confidentiality requirements.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certificate or a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certificate issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or be eligible for certification including completion of an AHIMA approved RHIT or RHIA Health Information Management education program.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • If you meet the Necessary Special Requirement based on the eligibility option for the RHIT or RHIA certification, you must obtain one of these certifications within 12 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and maintain the integrated health record system for offenders in accordance with policies and standards
  • File, withdraw, issue, and transfer medical records while following confidentiality rules and legal requirements
  • Check medical records for accuracy and completeness and refer issues to health care staff for correction
  • Prepare periodic reports on topics such as morbidity, mortality, and service utilization
  • Present medical records when required for court cases involving subpoenas
