About The Position

Performs all physics calculations and testing necessary for calibration of equipment and to ensure that the programs are in place to facilitate the produce of quality diagnostic images, consistent with the available technology and which optimize safety (including radiation, medical, and electrical) for the patient. To assure compliance with all certifying and governing bodies.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Medical Physics.
  • Board certified in Diagnostic Radiological Physics.
  • One year of experience performing physics in a clinical setting.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Medical Physics.
  • ABSNM (American Board of the Society of Nuclear Medicine) certification.
  • Three years of experience performing physics in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in planning for resource allocation with Radiologists, administrators, and technologists, including: equipment usage, selection and replacement, staffing requirements, budget preparation, and review of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for performance specification, acceptance testing and performance verification, and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Guides technologists in the use of new technology.
  • Supervises calibration, preventive maintenance, repair of equipment, and documentation of all relevant information.
  • Develops and administers the Radiation Safety Program, acting as Radiation Safety Officer for the institution. Includes the ALARA Program and patient/staff dose assessment.
  • Participates in the development of criteria for approval of new uses of radiation.
  • Coordinates and leads the Institutional Radiation Safety Committee, MRI Safety Committee, and other committees as appropriate.
  • Determines shielding required for new or renovated equipment rooms for ionizing radiation and for radio frequency and magnetic fields.
  • Facilitates compliance with all regulating and certifying agencies.
  • Consults with imaging physicians and others, using medical imaging equipment regarding the radiological and radiobiological aspects of patient examinations.
  • Assists physician in the evaluation of quantitative studies, such as the measurement of cardiac ejection fraction.
  • Optimizes imaging procedures, e.g. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) protocols, radiographic techniques, technologist activities, and efficient utilization of imaging equipment.
  • Participates in diagnostic imaging and medical physics meetings, and other scientific meetings and conferences, to learn and disseminate state-of-the-art information.
  • Explains radiation safety aspects of procedures and assesses patient’s ability to comply.
  • Assures quality patient care by promoting effective communication and teamwork through the organization.
  • Effectively uses available resources to provide a more complete and personally satisfying experience for all customers.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the needs of the age group served.
