About The Position

The Medical Physicist supports and advances clinical operations across the UAMS Radiation Oncology Clinic, contributing to institutional initiatives in quality, safety, education, and clinical innovation. This position provides independent professional expertise in treatment planning, dose calculation, and quality assurance to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered radiation therapy. The physicist provides clinical coverage for photon and/or proton therapy services, including daily treatment support; commissioning, calibration, and routine and patient-specific quality assurance of treatment planning, delivery, and imaging systems; and maintenance of QA programs in accordance with AAPM, regulatory, and institutional standards. Collaboration with physicians, dosimetrists, therapists, engineers, and staff is essential to support safe workflows, complex treatment planning, and chart review processes. The position also supports the clinical implementation and optimization of advanced technologies, such as SRS/SBRT, proton therapy, surface-guided radiation therapy, motion management, dual-energy CT, and emerging treatment and imaging platforms. As a faculty member, the physicist participates in education and mentorship, accreditation and regulatory activities, quality improvement initiatives, translational clinical research, and departmental service. The role operates under general direction and exercises broad professional judgment in executing complex clinical and technical responsibilities.

Requirements

  • PhD or Master's in Physics or a closely related discipline.
  • ABR Certification or Eligibility in Therapeutic Radiological Physics
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive clinical physics support for photon and/or proton therapy services.
  • Ensures accurate dose delivery, safe clinical workflows, and compliance with departmental quality and safety standards.
  • Supports daily treatment operations, image guidance, treatment planning, and verification activities, including plan review, secondary and independent dose calculations, patient-specific and routine quality assurance, and comprehensive chart reviews.
  • Performs commissioning, calibration, and ongoing quality assurance of treatment planning systems, delivery units, and imaging systems, and develops, maintains, and improves QA programs in accordance with AAPM, regulatory, and institutional guidelines.
  • Collaborates closely with physicians, dosimetrists, therapists, engineers, and staff to resolve clinical and technical issues and support high-quality patient care.
  • Collaborates with radiation oncologists, physicist colleagues, therapists, engineers, and administrative staff to support efficient, safe, and patient-centered clinical workflows.
  • Actively participates in departmental and institutional committees, accreditation and quality initiatives, and program development activities.
  • Contributes to education and mentorship of residents, students, and staff, and supports professional development, continuous improvement, and operational excellence aligned with the academic and clinical mission of UAMS.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support departmental objectives.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
