About The Position

This role involves fulfilling patient care responsibilities, including managing patient flow, assisting with examinations, collecting patient history, performing screenings, and providing instructions. It also includes significant clerical duties such as managing patient records, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance, and maintaining charts. Additionally, the position requires maintaining a clean and organized clinical environment, ensuring infection control, and managing supplies. The role also encompasses clinical medical assisting tasks like taking vital signs, preparing for physical exams, handling biohazard waste, performing laboratory procedures (including CLIA-waived tests and venipuncture), EKG testing, and providing emergency first aid. Collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other staff is essential, as is maintaining patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance. The Medical Assistant must adhere to the scope of practice for medical assistants in laboratories and practices based on NYS guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill patient care responsibilities including checking schedules, organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam rooms, assisting patients with walking transfers, collecting specimens, preparing for exams, collecting patient history, performing screenings, charting, and relaying instructions.
  • Complete clerical responsibilities including sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/X-ray reports and referral information, completing forms, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics, and managing/updating charts.
  • Meet environmental responsibilities including setting up instruments and equipment, cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment, ordering, sorting, and storing supplies, and restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Complete organizational responsibilities including respecting patient rights, responding to emergency codes, and sharing problems with the supervisor.
  • Fulfill clinical medical assisting responsibilities including checking vital signs, preparing for physical examinations, prescription verifications, biohazard waste disposal, laboratory procedures (OSHA, CLIA-waived testing), venipunctures, specimen handling, EKG testing, completing lab draws, and providing emergency first aid.
  • Work as part of a team with Physicians, APPs, Licensed Nurses, Receptionists, and all other staff.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and ensure HIPAA compliance.
  • Prepare patients before drawing blood, explain blood draw procedures, and answer questions.
  • Follow all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas.
  • Gather medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags, and test tubes.
  • Verify patient information and label blood samples properly.
  • Accurately update patient information in the organization’s database.
  • Help nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws.
  • Comply with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Adhere to the MA scope of practice in the laboratory and practice based on NYS guidelines.
