About The Position

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Medical Laboratory Technologist - National Immunohematology Reference Laboratory to join our dynamic Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services team in ON-Brampton. The Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by performing routine testing, as well as other relevant lab duties. In this role, you will be responsible for accessioning, testing, interpreting and reporting all results, management of blood and blood component inventory and post-production component processing and preparation of reagents and equipment for daily use. You will perform these duties in accordance with all Canadian Blood Services Operating Procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Technology training program with attained certification or eligibility for certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is required.
  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) is required, or eligible to obtain registration.
  • Experience in antibody investigations and blood group discrepancies required.
  • General knowledge of hospital and various laboratory policies and procedures, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), is required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with departmental staff, management, volunteers, customers, and the general public.
  • Competency in the use of Laboratory software, computers within a Windows operating system using Microsoft Word, Excel, and e-mail software.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Displays telephone etiquette and maintains high professional standards.
  • Ability to follow instructions, document work and assume responsibility for own work.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and verification of laboratory equipment in accordance with approved work instructions to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Assist internal and external customers.
  • Perform and record all testing related quality control/assurance activities.
  • Maintain technical competency and promote continuous learning.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement activities.
  • Perform blood grouping, phenotype testing, antibody screening and antibody identification for patient and donor samples.
  • Perform adsorptions, elutions, titrations and other specialized serological procedures on complex antibody identification cases including genotyping.
  • Ensure appropriate performance of related quality control /assurance activities.
  • Perform, verify and document routine maintenance and verification procedures for laboratory equipment in accordance with approved work instructions and regulatory requirements.
