About The Position

Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT) provide lab services for diagnostic purposes that support clinical care, as well as academic and research needs. The roles of the MLT are to perform analytical analysis and to effectively communicate and collaborate with other IWK departments to ensure effective, efficient, and the highest quality of care. In addition, the MLT ensures laboratory services are managed with the patient’s and family needs as a priority. The MLT works within their scope of certified technical knowledge and experience, exhibits leadership, sound professional judgement and initiative, and maintains patient confidentiality. The MLT in the IWK Core Lab possesses the technical ability and problem-solving skills to perform tests (both manual and automated) in the clinical areas such as Chemistry, Specialized Chemistry, Hematology, and/or Transfusion Medicine. The MLT consistently demonstrates the ability to work in stressful situations, sometimes with little or no supervision, and the ability to make decisions exercising critical thinking skills. The MLT also works within established protocols for testing, maintenance, quality control, and calibration and frequently interacts with computerized information systems. MLT are often called upon to collect patient samples.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved program in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Registered or eligible for registration with CSMLS required
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure with NSCMLT required
  • A sound knowledge of minimum of at least six (6) of the functions listed above required
  • Well-developed organizational skills and communication skills required
  • The ability to work in a team environment in addition to independent work is essential
  • Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to on-going training or professional development
