About The Position

This posting is to fill a current vacancy for a Medical Laboratory Technologist 1 at Public Health Ontario's (PHO) Corporate Office & Toronto Laboratory. The role involves performing testing and providing accurate and timely reporting of clinical and environmental laboratory tests as part of a team of laboratory professionals, adhering to PHO’s quality policies, technical procedures, and regulatory/accreditation requirements.

Requirements

Certification in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
Knowledge of and the ability to perform medical /environmental laboratory techniques/ procedures, laboratory safety practices and utilize laboratory equipment.
Knowledge of computer applications to utilize standard and laboratory information systems.
Knowledge of accreditation and regulatory requirements that impact the scope of testing.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with colleagues and liaise with laboratory staff and sample submitters.
Physical coordination and manual dexterity in the use of keyboard, operate and maintain laboratory equipment, and perform testing of specimens.
Requires physical activity such as walking, lifting, stretching, and bending.

Valid Human Pathogens and Toxins Act security clearance may be required when working in the CL3 Laboratory.
May be required to lift up to 10 kg.
May be required to work within a biological safety cabinet/fume hood.
May be required to perform repetitive tasks such as pipetting.
May be required to stand or sit for the period of one shift.
May be required to work rotational shifts as scheduled.

Responsibilities

Perform laboratory activities and work in accordance with the laboratory's management system.
Conduct standardized medical/clinical/environmental tests and procedures for the isolation, quantification, identification, molecular testing, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of various microorganisms.
Carry out testing as outlined in the method using established quality assurance and control procedures, including internal and external proficiency testing.
Report and relay results to specimen submitters accurately, clearly, unambiguously, and objectively within acceptable turnaround times.
Authorize the release of laboratory test results and discuss test results with clients within the restrictions of College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario regulations.
Ensure specimens are handled and stored appropriately to protect test integrity and the interests of the laboratory and customer.
Review daily QC materials, evaluate the significance of deviations, and take appropriate actions to resolve discrepancies.
Maintain and monitor equipment and inventory of supplies to ensure operability and adequate supply.
Provide direction and guidance to Laboratory Attendants and assist with training/retraining staff.
Provide technical assistance to Senior Technologists and Operational Lead.
Perform activities to support the laboratory’s Quality Management Program, including accreditation and regulatory requirements.
Maintain privacy and confidentiality as outlined by PHO’s corporate policies.
Perform laboratory activities impartially, disclose any conflicts of interest, and do not allow commercial, financial or other pressures to compromise work or impartiality.
Perform other duties or projects as assigned.
