This role involves rotating through various sections of the Blood Donor Center and participating in blood drives at remote locations. The technician will independently perform standardized clinical laboratory tests and procedures specific to blood banking. Key responsibilities include conducting personal interviews to gather medical histories and visually inspecting blood donors to ensure compliance with FDA criteria and current manufacturing practices. The technician will determine donor eligibility based on judgment and adherence to SOPs and regulatory guidelines, screening individuals for blood donation and ensuring their blood is safe for use. This includes taking vital signs, checking hemoglobin/hematocrit levels, and preparing samples for testing. The role also involves processing whole blood units, entering results into the computer system, and labeling units for shipment or storage. Manufacturing of blood components like packed red blood cells, platelets, and fresh frozen plasma, along with performing quality control tests, are also essential duties. The technician will manage inventory of supplies, participate in mobile blood drives, and perform maintenance and quality control on blood bank equipment. Working with hazardous materials and operating various computer systems, including the blood bank management system, are integral parts of the job. The role requires maintaining accurate and legible records in accordance with regulatory requirements and providing input on new instrumentation and procedures. Training and orientation of new personnel and students in blood banking are also expected. The technician will conduct donor assessments, prepare donors for phlebotomy, screen candidates for autologous collections, and monitor donors during the donation process, administering first aid or seeking medical assistance as needed. Processing of apheresis donors, including taking histories and vital signs, and collecting single donor plasma and platelets are also part of the duties.
