About The Position

Frederick Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician for our Rose Hill location. This is an as-needed basis position with variable shifts. The role involves performing assigned routine procedures efficiently to ensure quality care with minimal turn-around-time.   • Successfully completed academic course of study in an accredited college or university and the clinical training at an accredited facility which will lead to an Associate’s Degree to become a Medical Laboratory Technician and eligible for certification.
  • Alternative: Associate Degree in a related science with appropriate clinical training and certification eligibility; or 50 week military course with certification ability; or successfully passed HEW or HHS exam.

Nice To Haves

  • MLT ASCP certification is preferred, but not required.
  • If Home Cost Center is Clinical Trials, Possess IATA and GCP certification or be willing to complete the required courses within first month of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates proficient performance regarding all laboratory technical procedures, making decisions based on experience and/or education.
  • Recognizes and resolves problems, troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment, and uses alternative methods where trained.
  • Correlates data extensively using clinical information and knowledge of testing theory to determine the reasonableness of results.
  • Follows protocol for running QC and accepting/verifying results, resolving any out-of-control, discrepant, or unexpected results with adequate documentation of corrective action.
  • Produces accurate results, with no more than one technical error in a 12-month period.
  • Follows all laboratory specimen handling policies and procedures.
  • Performs appropriate functions in LIS according to laboratory protocol with accuracy and precision.
  • Produces and reports results with accurate transcription according to protocol in a timely manner.
  • Maintains and completes patient information records as required.
  • Completes work or reports results according to protocol.
  • Consistently completes work within laboratory established Turn-Around-Time.
  • Organizes and performs several tasks simultaneously during peak work periods.
  • Consults supervisor for additional assignments or special projects during light workload situations.
  • Participates in department performance improvement.
  • Demonstrates punctuality and timeliness regarding work schedule.
  • Begins work at the start of the assigned shift.
  • Maintains attendance record for less than step 1 of the absence control program.
  • Accurately uses time clock, clocks in and out of every shift.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions.
  • Adapts to change or unusual circumstances in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption.
  • Notifies supervisor of any problems and documents any corrective action.
  • Retains knowledge gained from training and requires no additional training to perform routine tasks.
  • Maintains a clean, organized area with adequate supplies.
  • Assists in basic procedures, report production, specimen procurement, and accessioning.
  • Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of safety manual, Infection Control, Disaster manual, and department specific manuals.
  • Knows where MSDS are kept.
  • Knows Chemical Hygiene Plan and what to do in the event of an actual chemical spill.

  • Knows Emergency Response Plan procedures in the event of an actual fire or major spill.
  • Follows all policies and procedures as outlined per department manual.
  • Promptly reads and reviews new policies and procedures and follows same.
  • Observes all aspects of job performance concerning objectives of laboratory in-service and continuing education.
  • Attends department and/or staff meetings as required or reads and initials minutes within established time frames.
  • Conveys knowledge competently to new employees in an encouraging and interesting way.
  • Participates in staff development and continuing education programs.
  • Recognizes employee’s need for additional training when a new test is introduced or when a new employee is introduced to the shift, communicating with section supervisor so additional training can take place.
  • Responsibly follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.
  • Changes gloves regularly and washes hands between and after glove changes.
  • Disposes of sharps in red sharps container where appropriate.
  • Throws used gloves in biohazard container only.
  • Wears lab coat.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees.

  • Perform phlebotomy on clinical trial participants (if Home Cost Center is Clinical Trials).
  • Follows clinical trial lab processing manual for specimen handling and shipping (if Home Cost Center is Clinical Trials).
  • Packages and coordinates shipping for clinical trial lab specimens (if Home Cost Center is Clinical Trials).
  • Responsible for completing internal documentation for specimens, as well as complete data entry on electronic case report forms (if Home Cost Center is Clinical Trials).
  • Assist as needed with Biobank Projects.
  • Assist as needed with Medical Lab Technician related tasks in the Oncology Infusion area (IVOP).
  • Responsible for maintaining lab kit inventory, including monitoring for kit expiration, ordering new kits, and documenting lab kit destruction in alignment with each trial’s SOP.
  • Performs and maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
