About The Position

Beloit Health System is looking to add an MLT to our Team at NorthPointe! This position is eligible for benefits and involves performing and evaluating complex chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, immunologic, and immunochemical tests to obtain data for physicians. The role includes performing quantitative and qualitative analysis of body fluids using manual and automated instrumentation, reporting results, troubleshooting equipment and procedures, and maintaining laboratory equipment. The MLT will also meet established turnaround times, organize and prioritize work, access and input information from the EMR, and assist with training new employees. Additional duties include assessing the reliability of results, communicating with physicians about issues, maintaining a clean work area, using personal protective equipment, assisting with specimen processing and outpatient draws, performing glucometer runs, managing glassware, checking in supplies, processing reference laboratory requests, and registering outside lab requests and specimens.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician or an equivalent combination of education and clinical experience making the employee eligible for taking the registry exam.
  • Registration by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists within one year of hire.
  • Requires promptness in answering phone requests, instrument, and out-patient alarms.
  • Requires promptness and efficiency in reporting results of laboratory findings via computer and paper or "call back" results if indicated.
  • Maintain knowledge and ability to operate safely all instruments, needles, and sharps used in daily work assignments.
  • Requires the ability to work independently and to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations, and to meet deadlines required by "stats" and routines.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply proper procedures to Beloit Memorial Hospital policies.
  • Requires knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Maintain ethical conduct and keep confidential personal and medical information about patients.
  • Adhere to established hospital and Laboratory policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Is responsible to assimilate information from observations, verbal interactions, and printed materials, under conditions of multiple simultaneous stimuli.
  • Must plan, prioritize, and respond to information in an appropriate time frame.
  • Participate in educational programs and continually seek for personal development.
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly and to interact positively with physicians, peers, and the public.
  • Requires promptness and efficiency in reporting results of laboratory findings via computer and paper or " call back" results if indicated.

Responsibilities

  • Performance and evaluation of various complex chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, immunologic, and immunochemical tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by the physician.
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of body fluids using manual and automated instrumentation.
  • Accurately and completely report results of tests and procedures.
  • Effectively recognize and resolve problems, troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment and ineffective procedures, and use alternative methods when appropriate.
  • Effectively maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Performs and records instrument checks, quality control procedures, calibration, and other maintenance when required.
  • Meets established turnaround time for routine and STAT tests.
  • Able to organize and prioritize work during both heavy and light workload situations.
  • Able to access, input, and retrieve information from the EMR.
  • Ability to work extra during staff shortages or until workload is complete.
  • May include working shifts other than currently scheduled.
  • Assists in the training of new employees to the laboratory.
  • Ability to utilize sound judgement and generally accepted medical technology principles when assessing the reliability of results generated.
  • Communicates with physicians when callback values problems exist.
  • Maintains a clean and disinfected work area and uses appropriate personal protective equipment, as required
  • Assists with specimen processing.
  • Assists with processing orders and drawing outpatients.
  • Perform glucometer run.
  • Maintains clean supply of glassware.
  • Checks in supplies, comparing product received with packing slip.
  • Adheres to lab cleaning schedule and keeps appropriate log of these activities.
  • Process reference laboratory requests and reports.
  • Receive and register via EMR lab requests and specimens from outside sources and bring to proper sections within laboratory.
  • Maintain reference Laboratory supplies.
  • Package and process special requests requiring mailing through general mail.
