The role performs basic laboratory procedures, including phlebotomy, specimen processing, quality control, and waived or moderate-complexity testing as classified under CLIA, and reports results accurately and promptly. When assigned to Transfusion Service, the technician performs moderate-complexity testing within the scope of licensure and may manage blood inventory, prepare blood products, and issue products for transfusion. The technician follows applicable local, state, and federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to protect patient privacy and maintain safety and reliability. Under the stated scope, an MLT may perform and report waived or moderate-complexity tests, but not high-complexity testing. Microscopic analysis and immunohematology procedures are excluded, except for blood smear reviews other than manual leukocyte differentials, microscopic urinalysis, and moderate-complexity blood typing such as automated ABO/Rh and antibody screen testing.
