About The Position

A Medical Technician/Technologist performs laboratory procedures using established and approved protocols, which require the broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision; maintains equipment and records; performs quality assurance activities related to test performance such as: quality controls, calibration, calibration verification, proficiency testing, linearity studies, and instrument or reagent troubleshooting. The MT operates under the guidance of the section supervisors and reports to the shift supervisor and laboratory director.

Requirements

  • Certificate of completion from a medical laboratory program prior to 1974, or (preferred) an associate or baccalaureate degree in the field of applied laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or successfully bridged from an associate degree to baccalaureate degree status based on required years of experience and successful registration examination by a nationally accredited laboratory credentialing agency.
  • Initial certification with an accredited credentialing agency, or working towards completion of certification, and maintain certification compliance with required continuing education.
  • Must have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Responsibilities

  • Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis. Evaluates and solves related problems.
  • Performs moderate and complex analytical tests and procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.
  • Analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
  • Recognizes abnormal results; answers inquiries regarding the test results, methodology, test specificity and sensitivity, and specific factors that can influence test results.
  • Operates instruments within the scope of training utilizing established protocols and quality control checks.
  • Recognizes equipment malfunctions and corrects problems within the scope of training utilizing established protocols.
  • Communicates information such as test results, normal range, and specimen requirements to authorized sources.
  • Performs routine quality control and maintains accurate records. Recognizes out-of-control results takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Demonstrates laboratory technical skills to new employees and students; gives direction and guidance to other MTs and support personnel.
  • Develops or participates in special projects as needed based on the needs of the laboratory.
