About The Position

This role involves performing laboratory and phlebotomy procedures independently. Key duties include drawing blood from patients, adhering to policies for blood and body fluid testing, assisting with data collection, interpreting quality control, documenting relevant information, and working additional hours as needed. The technician is responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and reporting results, ensuring compliance with laboratory procedures for handling, analysis, and record-keeping. They must maintain records for proficiency testing, adhere to quality control policies, and document all calibration and maintenance. The technician must identify and resolve issues that could affect test performance or reporting, or escalate them to the appropriate supervisor. Additionally, this role may encompass the duties of a Department Lead Lab Tech, involving oversight of departmental operations, quality control, instrument function, test menu expansion, new instrument setup, inventory management, calibration, temperature monitoring, performance monitoring of other staff, competency assessment, troubleshooting, and reporting to the Laboratory Director.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in a laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited institution.
  • At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, that at a minimum, includes either—(1) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or (2) 24 semester hours of science courses that include—(i) Six semester hours of chemistry; (ii) Six semester hours of biology; and (iii) Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • Experience as a medical laboratory technician/technologist.

  • General working knowledge of laboratory and operations.
  • Must be able to work with and properly handle different types of people.

  • Specific vision requirements include color vision.
  • Exceptional speaking and listening skills are essential.
  • Work involves a variety of changing activities; constant interruptions.
  • Must be able to work under stress: 20% of working time.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory and phlebotomy procedures independently.
  • Draw blood from patients.
  • Follow policies for blood and body fluid testing.
  • Assist in statistical data collection.
  • Interpret quality control.
  • Document appropriate material.
  • Work additional or non-scheduled hours as needed.
  • Perform specimen processing, test performance, and reporting of test results.
  • Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance.
  • Follow established policies and procedures when test systems are not within acceptable levels of performance.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting and correct them or notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Perform duties of Department Lead Lab Tech (if applicable), including monitoring quality control and instrument function, adding to test menu, new instrument start-up, inventory, instrument calibration, weekly departmental checklist, monitoring refrigerator/freezer temperatures, monitoring Technologist/Phlebotomist performance and reporting to Laboratory Director, employee competency, troubleshooting problem areas, reporting in lab meetings, and reporting unresolved departmental issues to Laboratory Director.
  • Perform phlebotomy successfully.
  • Possess working knowledge of the laboratory’s paper flow.
  • Follow established procedure and observe safety precautions in the laboratory, including wearing gloves and lab coat.
  • Maintain good and consistent attention to details.
  • Maintain good and consistent ability to prioritize and manage time wisely.
  • Consistently produce sufficient quantity and quality of work.
  • Present with professional demeanor.
  • Have working knowledge of reference lab procedures.
  • Comply with procedures for maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • Complete all applicable competency exercises.
  • Assist Phlebotomy staff when needed.

  • Project a professional and positive attitude regarding the hospital.
  • Monitor quality control and instrument function.
  • Add to test menu/New instrument start-up.
  • Manage inventory.
  • Monitor instrument calibration/maintenance.
  • Complete weekly departmental checklist.
  • Monitor refrigerator/freezer temperatures.
  • Monitor Technologist/Phlebotomist performance and report to Laboratory Director.
  • Manage employee competency.
  • Troubleshoot problem areas in the department.
  • Report in Monthly Laboratory Meetings.
  • Report unresolved issues to Laboratory Director.
  • Seek opportunities for self-development and identify areas of improvement.
  • Conduct self in a professional manner, acting as a role model while practicing and promoting effective guest relations.
  • Observe Hospital dress guidelines and wear ID Badge.
  • Provide proper notification for absence and tardiness and be punctual.
  • Participate in emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures and internal/external disaster plans.
  • Maintain equipment assigned to department, report malfunctions and order service as necessary.
  • Comply with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Complete projects and assignments on a timely basis.
  • Participate in the Continuous Quality Improvement Program.
  • Bring potential problems to the Director of Laboratory’s attention.
  • Assist in data collection.
  • Suggest solutions to problems.
  • Emphasize, support and be committed to CQI practices and processes.
  • Take action to assure CQI within areas of responsibility.
