About The Position

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, this role prepares, collects, logs, and labels specimens for testing from Salt Creek patients. The Medical Laboratory Technician performs pre/post-analytical processing and ordering of specimens arriving in the lab. This position is responsible for performing moderate and high-complexity testing. Key duties include performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, and recording maintenance data. The technician will demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles, understand and follow all physicians' orders, and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. They will also centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required, place samples in appropriate containers/tubes, and accurately label them. Following specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport is crucial. The role involves clearly and courteously explaining the venipuncture process and other specimen collections. Additionally, the technician performs quality control procedures and instrument checks, notifies nursing units and/or physicians of critical lab values, and maintains accurate laboratory records for statistics and billing. This role meets current documentation standards and policies, interacts professionally with the Laboratory Manager, President, and medical staff, and consults with other departments as appropriate for patient care and performance improvement. The technician follows standard precautions, manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly, demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, and instrumentation, and stays informed on current technologies. Maintaining current knowledge of hospital policy, CAP, JCAHO, state, and other regulatory requirements is essential. The ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations is also required.

Requirements

  • Graduated from MLT (Associates) program.
  • MLT certification.
  • 2 years phlebotomy experience.
  • Experience with blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, and recording maintenance data.
  • Strong foundation in medical laboratory technician science.
  • Able to solve technical and interdepartmental problems related to various Laboratory areas with assistance under supervision.
  • Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results and taking corrective action or notifying appropriate supervisory personnel.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous relevant clinical experience.
  • At least 2 years previous laboratory experience.
