About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) performs a wide range of clearly defined analyses at acceptable competency levels and in a timely manner. Analyses involve independent judgment delegated by the supervisor and appropriate to the employee’s expertise. The employee performs routine laboratory procedures carefully using predetermined criteria and reports unusual conditions to the supervisor. The role requires professional communication with patients, coworkers, and physicians, and efficient, accurate assistance with or completion of physician orders, including appropriate documentation. The employee is expected to know available clinic and community resources to help provide optimum medical care to patients and their families. This is a full-time, 1.0 FTE position, scheduled for 80 hours biweekly. Work is primarily on day shift, with varying start times typically at 6:00 AM, 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM, or 9:00 AM and corresponding end times for an eight-hour workday. Occasional coverage of evening, overnight, weekend, holiday, or other staffing vacancies may be required, infrequently and according to operational need. The employee must attend the work site as scheduled and participate in rotational on-call coverage. Duties may require limited unscheduled hours or a shift change to accommodate workload or labor shortages. Compensation depends on candidate credentials: the hourly wage range is $27.19–$34.80 for MLT candidates and $31.43–$42.32 for MLS candidates. Final compensation is determined based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity considerations. Requirements

MLT candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent level of education.
MLT candidates must have laboratory training culminating in national certification; MLT (ASCP or equivalent) certification is required upon hire or must be obtained within six months in the position.
MLS candidates must have a Bachelor of Science degree, including an internship under the direction of a pathologist in an approved laboratory.
MLS candidates must possess or be eligible to receive appropriate HHS-approved laboratory certification, such as ASCP or AMT; candidates not currently registered must pass the registry within the first 12 months of employment.
MLS candidates must maintain approved certification status, with renewal verified as active two months before the certification’s valid-through date.
Communicate effectively and professionally in English, both orally and in writing.
Be able to operate all laboratory equipment.
Be able to follow detailed blood collection and laboratory procedures.
Have adequate computer and keyboarding skills.
Be willing to obtain BLS certification within the first year of employment.
Complete the pre-employment health screening process successfully.
Be able to perform repetitive hand, wrist, and finger motions and use fingertip touch perception to locate blood vessels.
Be able to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Be able to attend the work site as scheduled and take rotational call.
Be able to work limited unscheduled hours or change shifts when required by workload or labor shortages.

Nice To Haves

For MLT candidates, a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in clinical laboratory science is preferred.
