About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) – Hematology is responsible for performing routine and specialized laboratory testing in the Hematology Department in accordance with established laboratory procedures, quality standards, and applicable regulatory requirements. The MLT will perform testing on patient specimens, operate and maintain hematology instrumentation, evaluate test results, perform quality control, troubleshoot instrumentation and testing issues, and accurately document all laboratory activities.

Requirements

  • BS in Medical Technology preferred, BS in Chemistry or Biology, or Associate Degree in Laboratory Science
  • Meet CLIA High Complexity Testing Personnel Qualifications
  • Performance of OSHA Category 1 tasks involving exposure to blood and bodily fluids

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialized hematology testing according to established procedures
  • Perform complete blood counts (CBC), differentials, platelet counts, reticulocyte testing, and other hematology procedures as assigned.
  • Perform manual differentials and review peripheral blood smears when indicated.
  • Recognize abnormal or questionable patient results and follow established procedures for review, repeat testing, dilution, correlation, and escalation.
  • Perform and document all quality control (QC) procedures, instrument calibrations, and reagent preparations to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Maintain laboratory instrumentation through regular operation, cleaning, calibration, and documentation of daily and scheduled maintenance.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues that may adversely affect test performance or result reporting, and take appropriate corrective action or notify the supervisor.
  • Demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are handled in the same manner as patient specimens, maintaining related documentation.
  • Adhere strictly to the laboratory's quality assurance and quality control policies and participate in internal and external quality programs.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and laboratory confidentiality standards.
  • Follow all Universal Precautions and consistently use required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, lab coats, and safety glasses.
  • Complete and maintain training on OSHA, HIPAA, Bloodborne Pathogens, First Aid, and other required safety protocols on an annual basis.
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering of laboratory reagents and supplies.
  • Clean and organize workstations and specimen storage areas to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Participate in method validations, assay development projects, and training of new personnel, as assigned.
  • Perform additional tasks and special projects as directed by the Laboratory Supervisor, Manager or Director.
