About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician tests all types of laboratory specimens for all age groups from neonates to geriatric patients; reviews and reports lab results; performs operational duties, maintenance and advanced troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate degree from an approved college or university and/or graduate of an accredited school of medical laboratory technicians, or equivalent such as military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489.
  • The above meets required criteria as defined by CLIA regulations for High Complexity testing (42 CFR 493.1489, Jan. 24, 2003
  • 0-2 years as a medical laboratory technician.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified (registered) or registry-eligible in accordance with an approved certifying agency, e.g. ASCP, HHS, AMT.
  • Registry eligible should obtain certification within 1 year from date of hire.
  • Once certified, no annual renewals are required.

Responsibilities

  • Processes and tests specimens for clinical studies
  • Reviews test results and applies the correct clinical interpretation of that data
  • Reports lab results accurately and responsively, to include use of laboratory information system
  • Processes blood and other body fluids.
  • Performs operation and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment to include advanced troubleshooting.
  • Performs venous and capillary phlebotomy and ensures specimen integrity
  • Performs basic clerical functions
  • Assists in creating procedures
  • Assists in teaching employees or students
  • Relays, orders, takes inventory and stocks supplies
  • Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
  • Maintains safe environment
  • Addresses patient population-specific needs
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities
