About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Specialist, Manager, or Director, performs a variety of complex clinical laboratory tests in one or more sections of the Pathology Department. This role requires professional-level knowledge to accurately analyze, interpret, and report test results, particularly abnormal or atypical findings. Responsibilities include equipment calibration, quality control, troubleshooting, and adherence to age-specific patient care considerations. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science (chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or related field), or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.
  • National certification by ASCP or equivalent in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, or another recognized specialty.
  • OR Eligibility for national certification with completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization.
  • OR Previously qualified or eligible for qualification as a technologist under CLIA standards.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and perform all assigned tests accurately.
  • Strong analytical and interpretive skills.
  • Physical and visual dexterity necessary to conduct and interpret laboratory testing.
  • Ability to stand and work at laboratory benches for extended periods.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of patient care across the lifespan, including aging, developmental stages, and cultural considerations.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience.
  • Maintain a current Rhode Island Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license

Responsibilities

  • Receive specimens and verify patient identification; confirm accuracy of physician orders and specimen labeling while preventing contamination.
  • Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains according to standard laboratory procedures; verify expiration dates and properly date/initial reagents and QC materials once opened.
  • Perform complex clinical laboratory tests using methodologies including EIA, IFA, Chemiluminescence, RIA, Electrophoresis, Immunoassay, and Colorimetry.
  • Monitor testing parameters and interpret, analyze, and evaluate test results using professional judgment.
  • Interpret the clinical significance of test results and collaborate with colleagues to confirm unusual or inconsistent findings; escalate to Specialist, Manager, or Director as appropriate.
  • Accurately record and report test results to ordering physicians or the Department of Health, as required.
  • Perform quality control testing on equipment and reagents; document results and identify potential issues.
  • Assist with validation, development, and implementation of new tests and procedures, including recommendations for modifications.
  • Calibrate, monitor, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment; coordinate with manufacturers as needed.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, instruments, benches, and glassware.
  • Support inventory control, including stocking supplies to ensure laboratory readiness.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement initiatives as required.
  • Assist with training and orientation of new employees and with instruction of students and residents, as applicable.
  • Maintain compliance with all QA, Safety, Infection Control, and HIPAA policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a current Rhode Island Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license, including completion of at least 15 continuing education hours annually.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
