About The Position

Under the general supervision of a Specialist, Manager, or Director, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs highly complex clinical laboratory testing in one or more laboratory sections within the Pathology Department. This role requires professional-level knowledge to perform, analyze, interpret, and validate test results, including abnormal or atypical findings. Responsibilities include equipment calibration, quality control review, troubleshooting instrumentation issues, and ensuring accurate reporting of results in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements. Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science field (chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or closely related field), or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.
National certification (ASCP or equivalent) in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, or another recognized categorical certification OR Eligibility for national certification with completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS‑approved organization OR Previously qualified or eligible to qualify as a technologist under CLIA standards
Ability to operate laboratory instruments and equipment and perform all assigned tests accurately.
Strong analytical and interpretive skills.
Physical and visual dexterity required for laboratory testing and analysis.
Ability to stand and work for extended periods at laboratory benches.
Demonstrated knowledge of age‑specific patient care, human development, aging processes, and cultural considerations throughout the care process.
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.

Responsibilities

Receive, verify, and process patient specimens, ensuring proper patient identification, accurate labeling, and order validation while preventing contamination.
Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains according to standard laboratory formulas and procedures; verify expiration dates and properly date/initial reagents and QC materials upon opening.
Perform and interpret complex clinical laboratory testing using multiple methodologies, including but not limited to EIA, IFA, Chemiluminescence, RIA, Electrophoresis, Immunoassay, and Colorimetry.
Monitor testing parameters, analyze results, and interpret the clinical significance of findings.
Collaborate with fellow technologists and leadership to confirm unusual or unexpected results and resolve test or procedural variations.
Record and report results accurately to ordering physicians or regulatory agencies, as required.
Participate in the instruction of students and residents and assist with the orientation and training of new employees.
Perform quality control testing on reagents and equipment; document results and identify trends or potential issues.
Support the development, validation, and implementation of new tests and procedures, including making recommendations for modifications.
Monitor, set up, calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment; coordinate with manufacturers’ technical support as needed.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory equipment, instruments, glassware, workspaces, and benches.
Assist with inventory management, including stocking supplies to ensure laboratory readiness.
Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.
Maintain a valid Rhode Island Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license, including completion of at least 15 continuing education hours annually.
Comply with all Quality Assurance, Safety, Infection Control, and HIPAA policies and procedures.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
