About The Position

Under the general supervision of a Specialist, Manager, or Director, the Clinical Laboratory Technologist performs complex clinical laboratory testing across one or more sections of the Pathology Department. This role requires advanced professional knowledge to accurately analyze and interpret test results, including abnormal or atypical findings. Responsibilities include equipment calibration, execution and interpretation of complex testing and associated quality control procedures, and troubleshooting equipment issues. All duties are performed with consideration of age-specific patient needs. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in: Clinical Laboratory Science Medical Technology Chemistry, Biology, or related field OR equivalent education/experience per CLIA standards
  • One of the following: National certification (e.g., ASCP or equivalent) in: Medical Laboratory Science Medical Technology Microbiology Chemistry Hematology OR eligibility for certification through: ABHES NAACLS Other HHS-approved programs OR prior qualification under CLIA standards
  • Minimum of 1 year clinical laboratory experience
  • Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment and performing tests
  • Strong analytical and interpretation skills
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity for detailed lab work
  • Ability to stand and work at lab benches for extended periods
  • Knowledge of age-specific patient care considerations
  • Cultural competence in patient care delivery
  • Exposure to: Infectious materials Chemical toxins Laboratory odors
  • Frequent visual concentration when examining specimens
  • Physical requirements include: Standing for extended periods Lifting and carrying supplies

Responsibilities

  • Receive specimens and verify patient identification
  • Validate physician orders and labeling accuracy
  • Ensure proper handling to prevent contamination
  • Perform complex clinical laboratory tests using methods such as: EIA (Enzyme Immunoassay) IFA (Immunofluorescence Assay) Chemiluminescence RIA (Radioimmunoassay) Electrophoresis Immunoassay Colorimetry
  • Monitor testing procedures and parameters
  • Analyze and interpret test results
  • Interpret clinical significance of results
  • Collaborate with colleagues to validate unusual findings
  • Escalate issues to Specialist, Manager, or Director as needed
  • Record and report results to physicians or regulatory agencies
  • Perform QC checks on equipment and reagents
  • Document and analyze QC results
  • Participate in Quality Assurance and Improvement programs
  • Calibrate and set up laboratory equipment
  • Troubleshoot operational issues
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs
  • Clean and maintain equipment, instruments, and workspaces
  • Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains per standard procedures
  • Verify expiration dates and properly label materials
  • Maintain laboratory inventory and stock supplies
  • Assist in training students, residents, and new hires
  • Support onboarding within assigned lab section
  • Adhere to QA, Safety, Infection Control, and HIPAA guidelines
  • Maintain compliance with hospital and departmental policies
  • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned
