About The Position

The Senior Medical Technologist reports to the Pathology Manager and is assigned to a specific laboratory section or discipline. This role may include responsibility for overseeing laboratory operations and staff performing testing within the assigned section. The Senior Medical Technologist performs non-routine, specialized, innovative, and developmental testing that requires advanced problem-solving, analytical judgment, and research skills due to the complexity and evolving nature of the work. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a closely related field, or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.
  • National certification (or eligibility) in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology by ASCP or an equivalent certifying body.
  • Advanced or Master’s-level coursework in the area of specialization is preferred; equivalent specialized work experience may be substituted.
  • Ability to operate laboratory instruments and perform all procedures within the assigned section with accuracy and reliability.
  • Advanced analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of patient care principles across the lifespan, including aging processes, developmental stages, and cultural considerations.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of specialized, job-related experience beyond experience required to offset formal Master’s-level training.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and assess the suitability of solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory procedures; prepare variations for specialized testing as needed.
  • Apply advanced knowledge and expertise within the assigned laboratory section to perform and interpret routine, specialized, innovative, and developmental tests and analyses.
  • Participate in research projects within the laboratory section, including the review, analysis, development, and implementation of new or improved clinical laboratory procedures and techniques.
  • Serve as a technical resource to laboratory staff within the area of specialization by providing guidance on complex problem-solving, including: Identifying causes of unusual or atypical results Developing and validating complex testing procedures Troubleshooting equipment and instrumentation malfunctions Defining testing parameters and protocols
  • Review relevant professional and scientific literature (journals, research papers, texts) to stay current on advancements, innovations, and emerging methodologies within the specialty area.
  • May contribute to professional literature by presenting research findings, analyses, or professional perspectives within the area of expertise.
  • Provide clinical education and training to students and residents within the assigned specialty; may conduct formal classroom instruction, presentations, or workshops as required.
  • May participate in interviewing, selection, and performance evaluations of laboratory staff.
  • May perform duties of a Pathology Technologist when operational needs require.
