About The Position

This is a Per Diem Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) position at Swedish Hospital. The role involves performing patient tests using automated equipment and various methodologies in Chemistry, Hematology, and Microbiology. The MLS is responsible for maintaining competencies, performing quality control, reviewing test results for accuracy, and notifying appropriate personnel of critical results. The position also includes instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, staying updated with healthcare changes, participating in continuing education, and maintaining a safe work environment. Additionally, the MLS will assist in training new employees and students, and may help with competency assessments for moderate and high complexity testing. The role actively promotes patient satisfaction and customer service values.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technician or Bachelor’s in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or equivalent
  • MT, MLS or MLT (ASCP) certification or equivalent is required
  • Experience in clinical laboratory preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (verbal, written, computer)
  • Must have independent decision making skills
  • Must have organizational skills
  • Must be detail-oriented

Responsibilities

  • Actively promotes patient satisfaction and customer service values with all staff members.
  • Instructs and encourages coworkers to treat patients and customers courteously.
  • Performs patient tests, manually and with automated clinical laboratory equipment, reagents and/or test methodologies in Chemistry, Hematology, and Microbiology.
  • Maintains competencies in accordance with policy and procedures of the hospital and laboratory department.
  • Performs quality control per established departmental protocols.
  • Records QC appropriately and takes corrective action when QC is not within established guidelines.
  • Documents corrective action taken.
  • Reviews patient test results for accuracy and notifies appropriate clinical personnel or all critical results.
  • Documents notification per established protocols.
  • Performs instrument checks, maintenance and troubleshooting per department protocols.
  • Maintains knowledge level consistent with the changes within the healthcare environment.
  • Participates in continuing education programs, in-services, lab meetings and various committees.
  • Recognizes abnormal or unusual test results and makes appropriate decisions before releasing results.
  • Notifies supervisor and pathologist if necessary.
  • Performs computer functions efficiently, manages workload and established turnaround times.
  • Maintains a safe work environment by using required PPE and protective devices.
  • Handles biohazardous materials and chemicals according to established protocols.
  • Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures to comply with safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Notifies the appropriate Laboratory section Lead Technologist / Supervisor / Manager / Director or designee when stock supplies are low.
  • Assists in orientation and training of new employees and students.
  • May assist in competency assessment of moderate and high complexity testing.
