About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist is responsible for laboratory specimen processing, test performance and test result reporting in the clinical departments of the laboratory. The position is responsible for performing procedures relative to quality control, quality assurance and preventive maintenance according to laboratory protocols. Strives to achieve highest level of customer satisfaction through activities and interaction with customers.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a program in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Successful completion of MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent
  • Meets federal guidelines (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments/CLIA) for performing high complexity testing
  • Any training less than 4 years may be considered on basis of equivalency as reviewed by Director of Laboratory
  • Current AHA Basic Life Support Certified
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers using empathy and positive interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multi-task with efficiency and accuracy
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form

  • MA-P and BLS must be obtained within 90days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and facilitates good working relationships with superiors, physicians, staff members and co-workers/peers.
  • Contributes in problem-solving activities intra-and inter-departmentally.
  • Demonstrates flexible staffing needs within the department.
  • Uses department resources (supplies, equipment) in a cost effective manner.
  • Communicates effectively and in a timely manner to medical director, co-workers and physicians through informal updates, written and verbal communications.
  • Consistently meets attendance standards and follows the department standards for "calling in" and requesting time off.
  • Must accept responsibility to model all facets of cooperative team member dynamics. Examples of these include not verbalizing grievances regarding another team member, but rather seeking out individuals and resolving those differences.
  • Begins duties immediately upon reporting to work.
  • Procedures performed in accordance with approved procedure manual.
  • Ability to organize work during heavy workload periods.
  • Prioritizes/reorganizes workload in response to STAT requests.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for areas worked, communicates shortages to supervisor.
  • Learns new procedures/assignments in reasonable time frame.
  • Maintains clean and orderly work environment.
  • Correlates data and monitors test results for reasonability.
  • Reports all critical test values to appropriate individuals.
  • Procedures completed in an efficient manner according to established time frames (STATS, timed tests).
  • No more than one error per year requiring written corrective action.
  • Accountable and responsibility for the job performed.
  • Adheres to laboratory quality control policies, documents all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follows protocols for running controls and accepting and verifying results.
  • Notifies supervisor of out-of-control, discrepant or unexpected results within expected time frames.
  • Follows the Laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the Laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Supports corporate compliance initiatives.
  • Provides age specific care, as necessary.
  • Participates in the laboratory external proficiency testing program.
  • Participates in preparation for accreditation agencies.
  • Demonstrates understanding of safety policies and protocols.
  • Promotes Patient Safety goals.
  • Provide support for point of care related information systems, including implementation and validation of new middleware/software/test systems/firmware.
  • Performs Phlebotomy duties.
  • Performs specimen collection procedures, as required.
  • Collects and processes all biological specimens in accordance with departmental protocol.
  • Assist in evaluating equipment and new procedures.
  • Develop and update laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a resource for other personnel.
  • Uses data to troubleshoot problems and assure accurate patient results.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment according to manufacture recommendations at the appropriate time intervals.
  • Inventories and maintains laboratory supplies.
  • Maintains workload and instrument maintenance records.
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings on a regular basis.
  • Reads journals and scientific articles to keep current with the practice of Medical Technology.
  • Operates laboratory computer relative to job functions.
  • Projects competent, caring attitude to clients.
  • Adheres to the department appearance and dress code policies.
  • Maintains confidentiality relating to patients, specimens, and records.
  • Implements improvements as able or seeks help from coworkers and supervisor.
  • Assists coworkers-workers, as needed, to meet workload priorities.
  • Appropriately responds to written and verbal protocol communication.
  • Projects a positive and non-complaining attitude to patients and coworkers-workers.
  • Receives patients in the laboratory reception area.
  • Files laboratory report forms.
  • Renders needed laboratory reports to healthcare offices.
  • Answers phone and routes call to proper individual.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned or requested.
