About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for laboratory specimen processing, test performance and test result reporting in the clinical departments of the laboratory. The position is responsible for performing procedures relative to quality control, quality assurance and preventive maintenance according to laboratory protocols. Strives to achieve highest level of customer satisfaction through activities and interaction with customers.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a program in Medical Laboratory Technology.
  • Meets federal guidelines (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments/CLIA) for performing high complexity testing.
  • Successful completion of MLS (ASCP) certification or equivalent.
  • Current AHA Basic Life Support.
  • BLS must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, must communicate effectively with individuals from multiple disciplines.
  • Strong attention to detail, demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Ability to monitor own work to ensure quality, and possess excellent prioritization skills.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the organization’s values, and consistently follows hospital and laboratory policies & procedures.
  • Ability to organize work during heavy workload periods.
  • Prioritizes/reorganizes workload in response to STAT requests.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for areas worked, communicates shortages to supervisor.
  • Maintains clean and orderly work environment.
  • Performs and documents instrument calibrations and maintenance as scheduled and/or required.
  • Performs, assesses, troubleshoots, and documents quality control according to procedures.
  • Completes testing procedures in an efficient manner according to established time frames (STATS, timed tests).
  • Correlates data and monitors test results for reasonability.
  • Produces accurate results with minimal clerical/data entry errors, including omissions.
  • Reports all critical test values to appropriate individuals.
  • Learns new procedures/assignments prior to assigned deadline.
  • Participates in preparation for accreditation agencies.
  • Participates in laboratory & hospital quality & compliance inspections and initiatives.
  • Participates in the laboratory proficiency testing program(s).
  • Promotes Patient Safety goals.
  • Assists in evaluating equipment and new procedures.
  • Serve as a resource for other personnel, interns and students.
  • Inventories and maintains laboratory supplies.
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings on a regular basis.
  • Maintains MLS certification through documented continuing education.
  • Participates in process improvement initiatives.
  • Assists other laboratory team members as needed to meet workload priorities.
  • Appropriately responds to written and verbal protocol communication.
  • Projects a positive and non-complaining attitude to patients and hospital team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
