About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This role is within the 32nd & Ellis department, which is the biggest and busiest in the city, providing care to various departments including Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Women's/OB, Acute Care, and walk-in services. The hours for this role will vary for open hours from 0700-2100 every day, with an average of one afternoon shift (12:30-21:30) per week and one weekend every five weekends. There is limited call for acute care locations. The Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technician is responsible for the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing, ensuring laboratory safety, quality, and regulatory requirements are met.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in laboratory or biological sciences required (MLS)
  • Associates degree in laboratory or biological sciences required (MLT)
  • Possess a national certification for Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or be registry eligible.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) also acceptable.
  • Registry eligible candidates must successfully complete the Board of Registry examination within 12 months of employment.
  • If working in North Dakota (ND), must be licensed by the ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice.
  • Maintain continuing education credits equivalent to the state requirements as needed for license and certifications.
  • May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Collect laboratory specimens as needed
  • Process lab specimens and perform clinical laboratory testing (manual and automated) in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of equipment relevant to the position
  • Exercise critical thinking and independent judgment in decision-making and problem-solving
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to the organization’s principles, values, and ethics to promote a positive work environment
  • Seek out opportunities for continuous learning and professional development
  • Identify safety hazards and comply with all safety practices and protocols
  • Assist in training new staff
  • Serve as a laboratory resource
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Travel to other locations as required
