About The Position

Trinity Health Shelby is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) to join our laboratory team. Qualified Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) will also be considered based on experience, certification, and organizational policy. This position performs laboratory procedures according to protocols consistent with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988. The role conducts a variety of chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, and diagnostic laboratory tests to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of medical disorders, bodily dysfunction, and evaluation of patient response to treatment. The MLS/MLT analyzes and documents test results, reports clinical findings, and performs incidental specimen procurement, preparation, and processing. Tests are performed in the sections of Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Blood Bank.

Requirements

  • MLS (ASCP) certification or MLT (ASCP) certification
  • Associates/Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology.
  • National Licensure as a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician - ASCP, AMT
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.

  • Additionally languages preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receives specimens, clarifies test requests, checks specimen integrity/labeling.
  • Organizes, prepares and processes specimens.
  • Works independently in assigned departments in the laboratory.
  • Performs testing, evaluates results, solves problems, documents results and communicates reports as needed.
  • Assists in training and orientation of new employees and students.
  • Performs specimen collection duties.
  • Performs laboratory procedures according to protocols consistent with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988.
