About The Position

Performs a full range of diagnostic testing on patient specimens as well as ensures testing is conducted in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner that facilitates positive patient care. Interacts directly with medical staff members in interpretation and follows up on patient results. Works with other departments in scheduling, performing, and reporting tests. Performs waived moderate and high complexity testing according to CLIA regulations without supervision in accordance with the philosophy, goals, and objective of Gordon Memorial Health Services. Medical Technologists (MT) and Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) are instrumental in the day-to-day operations of the clinical laboratory. They are responsible for ensuring the patient samples are correctly procured, sampled, resulted, and delivered to the ordering provider. They are the front line in ensuring the analyzers are running to an optimal level, while performing preventive maintenance (PM) and quality control (QC). They are also the front line in ensuring that training takes place at an optimal level.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by a recognized regulatory agency or certification eligible.
  • Qualifies to do high complexity testing under 42CFR493. 1489(b)
  • Knowledge of Federal and State Regulations related to the lab.
  • Knowledge of Basic and advanced laboratory concepts, quality control procedures, running performing, reporting analytical test results; High Complexity and below.
  • Knowledge of Supervising bench level MT/MLT, Lab Assistants, Phlebotomists and any other individuals who fall under the auspice of the laboratory.
  • Knowledge of The key areas of the laboratory: Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Waived –Testing, Clinic Liaison, Shipping.
  • Knowledge of Phlebotomy: Venipuncture, Arterial, Capillary, Heel Puncture and Therapeutic Phlebotomy
  • Skills in Day-to-Day Lab Operation’s
  • Skills in Maintenance of analyzers
  • Skills in Reporting results, panic values, STATS, Delta Check Variations.
  • Skills in Patient Interactions
  • Skills in Set-up and coordination of Health Fairs
  • Skills in Communication and service to Outpatient Clinics
  • Skills in Resolution of In-Patient and Administrative Issues
  • Skills in Identifying problems, making frequent decisions regarding method and performance

  • Ability to Draw blood: venipuncture, capillary, heel-puncture, arterial, and therapeutic phlebotomy
  • Ability to Run and perform testing: High Complexity and below
  • Ability to Result and validate Q.C., Weekly, Monthly, Bi-monthly and Quarterly Preventive Maintenance
  • Ability to Perform all laboratory testing and monitor accuracy of others
  • Ability to Instruct personnel in all current and new procedures
  • Ability to Add, subtract, multiply, divide and understand and apply Standard Deviation concepts in Quality Control.
  • Ability to Adhere to National and State regulatory bodies

Nice To Haves

  • Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Previous laboratory experience preferred.
  • (MT) Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or equivalent (and completion of equivalent certification preferred)
  • (MLT) Associate of Science in Medical Technology or equivalent (and completion of equivalent certification preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates basic knowledge and understanding of established testing procedures and protocol by remaining abreast of procedure manual, updates, and performances in the following areas of laboratory testing: Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Immunoassay, Arterial Blood Gases, Urinalysis, Hemostasis, Transfusion Services Immunology/Serology, Microbiology, Phlebotomy, and other laboratory disciplines.
  • Assist with specimen collection, processing, and reference lab preparation.
  • Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood and urine, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
  • Remains responsible for the performance and completion of defined equipment, instrument maintenance protocols, and ensuring adequate supply levels.
  • Prepares and uses necessary equipment.
  • Performs and maintains documentation.
  • Promotes and ensures patient and staff safety in all aspects of responsibilities.
  • Ensure proper and periodic training is maintained.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
