This is a professional position responsible for providing supervision to the clinical microbiology and rabies sections of a large public health laboratory. All duties are performed under minimal supervision and involve considerable responsibility and authority. This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets. Supervises and assists in performing complex laboratory analyses including bacterial analysis of Clinical specimens, Direct Fluorescent Antibody (DFA) testing for rabies in animal specimens, and examination of patient specimens for ova and parasites. Functions as primary signatory and technical director for the clinical microbiology and rabies sections. Supervises all quality control procedures including performance of proficiency testing and competency assessment in accordance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). Manages laboratory supply inventory for microbiology and media prep, obtains formal quotes or bids, submits purchase orders and receiving reports as necessary. Supervises daily accounting procedures including receipt of payments and preparation of invoices. Serves as laboratory liaison for County Health Departments, hospitals, and physicians regarding specimens submitted, testing methodologies, specimen collection procedures, etc. Advises and provides technical consultations to other laboratories, physicians, public health personnel and other health professionals. Operates laboratory competency program which includes standardized and uniform documents that are compliant with CLIA regulations. Subject Matter Expert (SME) for statewide rabies testing to include training, quality, and safety. Assisting County Health Departments, Hospitals, and Epidemiology partners ship samples to CDC. Ensure staff meets rabies vaccination requirements. Performs other related duties as required
