About The Position

As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, you will perform analytical procedures, recognize deviations and provide interpretation following established standards and practices. This role involves performing testing, maintaining equipment, ensuring quality control, acting as a knowledge resource, utilizing computer systems, training others, pursuing continuing education, and providing guidance to co-workers in the absence of an on-site supervisor.

Requirements

Doctoral, Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution OR transcripts showing 60 semester hours from an accredited institution indicating 24 semester hours of medical technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours in chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination OR meet an alternate qualification route for Testing Personnel for High Complexity Testing as detailed in §493.1489.
Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS OR meet an alternate experience route for High Complexity Testing Personnel as detailed in §493.1489.
American Society of Pathology (ASCP) MLS or Categorical eligible at time of hire with certification achieved within one year of hire.

Responsibilities

Performs testing including processing biological specimens, performing routine and complex analytical procedures, and operating instruments within the scope of training.
Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, and complies with accreditation and regulatory agency requirements.
Evaluates and solves problems related to specimen collection and processing.
Performs scheduled maintenance procedures and recognizes equipment malfunctions, acting according to established protocols.
Performs, records, and maintains accurate quality control records, recognizing and acting on out-of-control results.
Answers inquiries regarding results and factors affecting results, fostering effective communication between the laboratory and healthcare team while maintaining patient confidentiality.
Performs routine inquiry and data input on laboratory computer systems, ensuring accuracy and performing corrective actions.
Utilizes computer software to enhance specialty area.
Instructs new associates and students as required, and assesses competencies of other test performers.
Completes required continuing education units and mandatory in-services, maintaining and upgrading personal professional development.
Provides guidance to co-workers in the absence of an on-site Supervisor regarding staffing and technical issues.
