Medical Laboratory Scientists (MTs) perform and evaluate complex laboratory tests in various areas of the clinical laboratory. This position requires an in-depth understanding of complex precision instruments and a variety of automated and electronic equipment. MTs work with minimal supervision and have the necessary background to recognize problems and be proficient in troubleshooting and problem-solving. MTs may serve as key operators for various instruments, assisting the supervisor in training, advanced maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting. They may also assist in developing and modifying procedures and programs to ensure the accuracy of testing. They perform all required Quality Control procedures, accurately document results, and appropriately follow through on all outliers. MTs notify the supervisor of any unusual or unexpected results and of all existing and/or potential problems of any nature, utilizing the appropriate laboratory and hospital documentation forms. They report all critical values to the appropriate person and complete the required documentation. MTs follow all organizational, departmental, and section policies, including Universal Precautions, Fire Safety, QA documentation, Hazardous Waste procedures, and others as applicable. Medical technologists maintain records in a complete, accurate, and legible manner. MTs assist with the orientation of new staff members, students, residents, fellows, and others as directed. MTs assume the duties required for the smooth operation of the laboratory.
